SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

A Gymnastics Lead Instructor is responsible for coaching and guiding individuals or groups in gymnastics, focusing on skill development, safety, and overall enjoyment. They design and implement lesson plans tailored to different skill levels and age groups, ensuring that students gradually build their abilities in balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination. Instructors demonstrate proper techniques, provide corrections, and encourage continuous improvement. Beyond technical training, they play a key role in motivating and supporting students, fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere where gymnasts can build confidence and reach their full potential.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and directs gymnastics programming.
  • Recommends changes in activities/procedures to improve effectiveness and/or service.
  • Serves as a liaison between the staff, public, and administrators/supervisors in the department.
  • Oversees safety and maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains facility areas in a safe, neat, clean, and attractive condition.
  • Complies with safety standards and emergency procedures.
  • Ensures student safety.
  • Recruits, recommends the hiring of gymnastic instructors/coaches, and provides orientation and ongoing training.
  • Trains program staff by providing work direction, assignments, and offering constructive feedback.
  • Observes gymnastics instructors during classes to ensure quality instruction.
  • Assesses participants’ abilities and determines level of instruction.
  • Teaches gymnastic classes to children when necessary.
  • Communicates progress to children and adults.
  • Notifies Manager of any equipment or supplies needed to be purchased.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Understanding of various gymnastics disciplines and the proper techniques for executing movements.
  • Knowledge of how the body moves, muscle development, flexibility training, and injury prevention.
  • Familiarity with gymnastics safety protocols, proper spotting techniques, and emergency response procedures.
  • Awareness of how to effectively coach different age groups, adapting teaching styles for young children, beginners, and advanced athletes.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate gymnastics movements and provide clear, step-by-step instructions.
  • Physically capable to support and guide gymnasts through movements to prevent injuries and improve form.
  • Proficiency in emergency response.
  • Structure lessons effectively and ensure training time is used productively.
  • Gymnastics instructors must be able to demonstrate skills, assist with movements, and maintain an active presence in training sessions.
  • Work with students at different skill levels, adjusting teaching methods to accommodate individual learning paces.
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills to interact with students, parents, and staff in a professional and supportive manner.
  • Able to work alongside other coaches, instructors, and gym staff to create a structured and positive learning environment.
  • Skill in designing engaging and progressive lesson plans, modifying exercises for different learning styles, and addressing students' challenges with innovative solutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Lift, support, and spot gymnasts of various sizes during skills, flips, and other maneuvers.
  • Capability to stand, move, bend, and lift for extended periods.
  • Agility and quick reflexes to move efficiently across mats and apparatuses to assist students.
  • Able to lead warm-ups, conditioning drills, and high-energy training sessions without fatigue.
  • Endurance to demonstrate skills and provide hands-on instruction multiple times throughout the day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Duties involving curriculum planning are performed in an office setting and the other duties are performed at the office setting, where there are minimal environmental hazards and risks associated with performing job assignments and essential functions of the job.
  • The environment takes place in a gymnastics center equipped with mats, beams, bars, vaults, and other apparatus.
  • The environment is often loud due to students, background music, and multiple training sessions occurring simultaneously.
  • Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on class schedules.
  • Requires frequent movement, including standing, walking, kneeling, and assisting students with skills.
  • Involves hands-on spotting of gymnasts to ensure safety and proper technique.
  • Exposure to chalk dust, mats, and gym equipment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience coaching gymnastics, assisting in classes, or working with children in a sports setting is highly desirable.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
