School Counselor
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field preferred
- Appropriate New Jersey certification or eligibility preferred
- Experience in college counseling, student support services, academic advising, or secondary education preferred
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, faculty, and community partners
Primary ResponsibilitiesCollege & Career Counseling
- Counsel students and families throughout the entirety of the college admissions process, including exploration of alternative career pathways such as trade vocations
- Guide students in developing individualized standardized testing plans, including the PSAT, SAT, and ACT
- Assist students with:
- College and scholarship applications
- Resume and activity list development
- Essay preparation and application timelines
- Interpretation of testing data and admissions requirements
- Ensure students understand graduation requirements, college/trade school admissions expectations, and NCAA eligibility requirements
- Schedule and coordinate college fairs, college representative visits, and financial aid programming for students and families
- Guide students through course selection to ensure alignment with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations
Student Support & Social-Emotional Learning
- Participate in, coordinate, and implement the Senior Seminar, Junior Seminar, and schoolwide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculums
- Conduct schoolwide advisory meetings and small-group sessions focused on SEL competencies, leadership development, college readiness, and career preparedness
- Meet with students experiencing academic difficulty following progress reports or report cards and collaborate with families to develop personalized improvement plans
- Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling addressing academic, social, and emotional concerns
- Collaborate with the school mental health specialist and external support providers when referrals are appropriate
- Confer regularly with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student growth and well-being
- Act as liaison for the Child Study Team by:
- Communicating service plans to appropriate parties
- Scheduling students for external instructional support services as needed
- Providing faculty with resources and strategies to support students with diverse learning needs
Experiential Learning & Student Enrichment
- Design and implement a robust, experiential career exploration program that prepares students for life beyond the classroom
- Coordinate:
- Guest speaker series
- Career panels
- Job shadowing opportunities
- Internship experiences
- Build relationships with professionals, alumni, businesses, and organizations to expand experiential learning opportunities for students
- Research, coordinate, and promote participation in prestigious external enrichment and leadership programs, including:
- Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminars
- FAA Tech Center educational initiatives
- Additional academic, leadership, and career-focused opportunities
- Collaborate with faculty and school leadership to identify eligible students, guide applicants through the process, and monitor student participation and feedback
