The music teacher is responsible for providing a success-oriented musical experience for upper elementary and middle school students (grades 5-8). The teacher will provide instruction to students with skills needed to become successful musicians in their own right. This is a part-time position and includes approximately 16-18 hours of instruction weekly. The teacher should demonstrate a strong classroom/learning environment and management skills using boundaries and rules to promote students’ self-management and responsibility. The music teacher is an adult role model for students and colleagues. The middle school curriculum is based on previously taught elementary school music education. It includes violin for grades 5-6 and music theory and the history of music for grades 7-8. The music teacher is responsible for creating lesson plans for classroom instruction and assigning practices and projects to students. Professionals in this field should have a Bachelor’s Degree in music education or a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education with a minor in music. They must be able to play and teach the violin for classes with grades 5-6. Duties Develop and implement a comprehensive music curriculum tailored to various age groups and skill levels. Conduct music lessons that include vocal training, instrument instruction, and music theory. Manage classroom behavior effectively to create a positive learning environment. Organize and participate in school performances, recitals, or other musical events. Maintain communication with parents regarding student progress and any concerns. Utilize creative teaching methods to engage students in learning music. Experience Proven experience in teaching music, including lesson planning and classroom management. Experience working with young adolescents in an educational setting is preferred. Skills in behavior management and understanding of childhood development principles are essential. All candidates must pass CORI and fingerprinting background checks, and complete trainings as required by SJPIICA and the Archdiocese of Boston.
