The Director of Adult Formation provides for the pastoral care and faith formation of faculty, staff, parents, and alumni. The Director facilitates the four-year Adult-Formation program, assists in presenting Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy for various constituents, and offers Jesuit and Catholic programming and opportunities which best serves the faculty/staff community.

Job Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serve as a leader and director of the Adult Spirituality Office.
  • Oversee the development of Ignatian Formation Program for coaches.
  • Administer all formal prayer experiences for new faculty/staff.
  • Actively participate on various school committees.
  • Promote Province-wide Jesuit programs (e.g. – IRE, Veteran Faculty, etc.).
  • Attend Province and Assistancy Mission and Identity Directors meetings as needed.
  • Supervise and recruit additional lay personnel to assist Adult FAM ministries.
  • Coordinate those participating in the spiritual conversation and the 19th Annotation of the Spiritual Exercises (3rd or 4th year of formation).
  • Plan and assist in the selection and support of school spiritual directors (for spiritual direction and the Spiritual Exercises.)
  • Assist in the planning of all scheduled days of prayer as well as assisting in the small prayer group formation.
  • Communicate with and coordinate retreatants, retreatants' supervisors, and other spiritual directors to determine readiness for the Spiritual Exercises each year.
  • Serve as a spiritual director for those participating in spiritual conversation/direction as preparation for the Spiritual Exercises.
  • Coordinate Years One and Two of the formation program in collaboration with faculty and staff presenters.
  • Coordinate and present Years Three and Four of the formation program in collaboration with faculty and staff presenters.
  • Be available for pastoral care and spiritual direction for the school community.
  • Plan and presideat liturgical services as needed if ordained.
  • Coordinating speakers, educational opportunities, and in-school prayer experiences, particularly during Advent and Lent.
  • Plan and pilot an optional overnight retreat experience. (faculty/staff as well as parents).
  • Plan for Advent and Lenten Mornings of Reflection for parents and alumni.
  • Connecting employee community with prayer and theological resources outside of school, including retreats, programming offered by the Archdiocese and the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, as well as programming offered by other educational institutions (i.e. Loyola University, Catholic Theological Union, University of Chicago, Dominican University Siena Center), and online resources.
  • Lead bi-weekly adult chaplain department meetings.
  • Collaborate with other department members in their programming as appropriate, including participation in student retreats, liturgies, and general programming.
  • Design and participate in school-wide employee programming such as the annual Faculty and Staff Retreat, New Faculty and Staff Orientation,General Faculty/Staff meetings, Faculty and Staff Service Day, and Faculty/Staff in-service days.
  • Submit an annual budget for Adult Formation and Ministry.
  • Participate fully in the life of the Catholic Church as an active member, including programming of parish and religious community as appropriate, as well as on-going personal spiritual development and professional minister growth, particularly in Ignatian spirituality.

Qualifications

To perform this role effectively, an individual must be able to successfully carry out each essential duty, with or without reasonable accommodation. The following qualifications represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position:

  • Practicing Roman Catholic.
  • Experience in spiritual formation within the Catholic, Jesuit tradition, especially as it relates to Catholic Jesuit education.
  • Completion of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola.
  • Formal training in spiritual direction.
  • Experience working in schools, especially in youth and/or adult formation.
  • Demonstrated skill in organization and collaboration.
  • Ability to relate to a variety of people and needs.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Post-graduate education in Spirituality/Theology preferred.

Additional Information

  • This is a salaried full-time, school-year (10 month) in-person staff position.
  • This position is eligible for Saint Ignatius College Prep's excellent benefits package.
