Description

SAIC is seeking a System Safety Engineer to support the US Navy in Indianapolis, IN.

This position has hybrid and/or remote potential.

Job Description

The Systems Safety Engineer will support a wide range of military programs and initiatives at SAIC Indianapolis. The Systems Safety Engineer will ensure system safety is incorporated throughout the lifecycle of defense systems, platforms, and equipment. This role involves the application of system safety engineering principles to identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks to personnel, assets, and mission-critical systems. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of MIL-STD-882E, DoD safety requirements, and other safety-related regulatory frameworks.

Job Duties

System Safety Analysis

  • Conduct system safety analyses (Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), etc.) to identify potential hazards and assess associated risks in compliance with MIL-STD-882E and other standards.
  • Evaluate design documentation, technical specifications, and test plans to ensure safety hazards are mitigated effectively.

Hazard Identification and Risk Mitigation

  • Develop and maintain Hazard Tracking Systems (HTS) or Hazard Tracking Databases (HTD) to document, track, and close identified hazards.
  • Propose and implement engineering controls or design changes to reduce risk to an acceptable level.

Safety Integration Across Lifecycle

  • Provide subject matter expertise in system safety support across the program lifecycle (from concept through sustainment).
  • Ensure safety requirements are appropriately addressed during systems engineering design, test, verification, and validation activities.
  • Participate in Configuration Control Boards (CCBs) and Design Reviews to identify and advocate for safety considerations.

Regulatory and Standards Compliance

  • Interpret and apply applicable industry and DoD safety standards, policies, and guidelines, including MIL-STD-882E, DO-178C, DO-254, OSHA, and other safety-specific requirements.
  • Ensure program safety compliance with federal regulations such as Range Safety Requirements or Explosives Safety.

Testing and Verification

  • Collaborate with test engineers to design and conduct safety-related testing (e.g., environmental, vibration, or shock testing).
  • Evaluate test results to assess system safety performance and provide recommendations for improvement.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Develop and maintain System Safety Program Plans (SSPPs), Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), and safety documentation required for program milestone reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.).
  • Present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and government customers.

Team Collaboration and Training

  • Provide system safety expertise to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Assist in training engineers, contractors, and end-users in safety processes and practices.

Customer Interaction

  • Engage with DoD stakeholders, Program Managers, and technical leads to identify safety objectives and meet program requirements.
  • Represent the organization at government-led safety working groups, reviews, and audits.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND CLEARANCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Safety, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or related fields (Master's preferred)
  • Five (5) years of experience in system safety engineering, preferably with DoD or government contractors.
  • Expertise in MIL-STD-882E and other DoD/industry safety standards.
  • Hands-on experience with safety analysis tools (e.g., Fault Tree , RAM Commander, etc.).
  • Familiarity with safety integration into Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes. Proficient in risk analysis techniques, hazard identification, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Attention to Detail Demonstrates a meticulous approach to identifying and mitigating risks.
  • Collaboration Works effectively across multidisciplinary teams to achieve safety objectives.
  • Leadership Acts as a safety advocate and fosters a culture of safety within the organization.
  • Adaptability Adjusts to evolving program priorities, customer requirements, and industry tools or practices.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret Clearance. Active Secret Clearance preferred.

Desired Experience

  • Master's Degree in Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, or similar discipline.
  • Certification in system safety (e.g., CSP, CFSE, or other relevant certifications).
  • Experience supporting high-profile or classified DoD programs (e.g., aviation platforms, weapons systems, space systems, or autonomous programs).
  • Knowledge of advanced tools such as DOORS, Aras, AccuRev, or related systems engineering platforms.
  • Experience with emerging technologies (e.g., AI, machine learning, and autonomous systems) and associated safety challenges.
