Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Food Service Director, the Cook prepares and serves food that is nutritious, flavorful, and appetizing to patients, staff, and visitors.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepares and serves food, including texture-modified and therapeutic diets.
- Works closely with the Front of the House Supervisor to develop the menu and daily specials.
- Assists in assuring proper receiving, storage, preparation, serving, sanitation, and cleaning procedures are followed.
- Assists with tracking and maintaining food and supply inventory, and food order placement.
- Creates and supports a positive, productive, and unified work environment.
- Mentors and guides other cook staff.
- Supports Line Cooks, Prep Cooks, Cashiers, and other kitchen staff as necessary and directs other employees with approval.
- Maintains proper food temps throughout food preparation and service.
- Responsible for reporting equipment product needs and or malfunctions to supervisor in a timely fashion.
- Ensure the established standards, safety, and quality guidelines are met.
- Follow infection control and universal precautions policies and procedures to ensure that a sanitary environment is achieved at all times.
- Follow proper reporting, isolation, and handwashing procedures/techniques.
- Assist with the cleaning and sanitizing of work areas using approved washing and sanitation methods.
- Consistent attendance and punctual arrival.
- Timely completion of assigned tasks, initiatives, and projects.
- Positively represents SMH by following instructions, being courteous, and cooperative with supervisor, co-workers, and client staff.
- Positive, pleasant, and tactful interactions with staff, patients and guests.
- Assist with shipment and receiving of food orders from vendors following established protocols.
- Avoid gossip and hearsay to ensure a professional work environment by reporting issues to the supervisor.
- Follow approved organizational policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience in the cafeteria food service industry preferred.
- May be required to complete an approved sanitation and safety course.
- Current ServSafe Certification or Food Protection Certification and Food Handler certification, a valid Navajo Nation Food Handlers Permit during tenure of employment is required.
- Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
- Must be able to perform routine, repetitive tasks continuously.
- Prepares and serves patients, café, and special function meals at the proper temperatures following patient preferences, menus, standardized recipes, diet modifications, portion control, production guides, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Assumes charge of food service operations in the absence of the Cafeteria Supervisor.
- Completes daily forms/logs (i.e., receiving, temperatures: food, refrigeration, dish machine; cooling; sanitizing; pot/pan sink; patient meal rounds).
- Follows proper food handling and food safety techniques according to established policies and procedures.
- Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
- Ability to work cooperatively and efficiently in a team environment.
- Ability to perform calmly under pressure.
- Ability to use critical thinking and reasoning skills to solve problems quickly.
- Ability to manage time effectively.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use their arms and hands to reach and grasp objects; and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office with a moderate noise level. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
Salary : $40,000 - $70,000
