Job Summary

Our Generator Technician is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and installation of both mechanical and electrical components of industrial generator sets and related equipment. They diagnose issues using advanced troubleshooting tools, execute repair plans, and ensure optimal system performance.

This position reports to the Vice President of Generator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel generators, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), and annunciator panels.
  • Conduct diagnostics, failure analysis, and troubleshooting using specialized tools.
  • Execute repairs and modifications on electrical and mechanical wiring in diesel control circuits.
  • Conduct automatic and manual transfer tests to simulate power outages and verify generator functionality.
  • Perform load testing to identify potential issues and prevent wet stacking.
  • Test and monitor battery, fuel, coolant, and oil conditions; ship oil samples for analysis.
  • Safely transport and dispose of hazardous materials in compliance with regulations.
  • Work an on-call rotation (24/7 availability required when on call) with occasional overnight travel (covered by the company).
  • Follow all Safecare policies, procedures, and core values. • Interact with customers, vendors, and co-workers professionally.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and follow all safety regulations and practices.
  • Open-minded willingness for continual learning

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Availability for occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to frequently kneel, bend, squat, push, pull, and reach.
  • Possess the ability to take constructive criticism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business, operational, safety, and customer service needs.
  • Pass required drug screening per company policy.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and meet company insurance requirements with the ability to drive long distances.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in person, by phone, video, email, and other electronic formats.
  • Read, interpret, and follow written procedures, policies, and instructions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing demands.
  • Perform repetitive motions, and prolonged computer or device use as required by role.
  • Work standard business hours with flexibility based on role needs.
  • Participate in assigned on-call rotations.
  • Use dispatching software and mobile applications.
  • Document findings accurately in written and electronic systems.
  • Make real time decisions in dynamic or high-risk environments.
  • Perform basic system maintenance and document findings.
  • Follow scheduled work hours and promote additional products and services.
  • Identify hazards and comply with safety protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain balance and coordination while working at heights, on ladders, lifts, uneven surfaces, or confined spaces.
  • Work safely in time sensitive or emergency response situations.
  • Maintain company vehicle, tools, and inventory.
  • Travel between customer locations in IN and KY and manage a mobile schedule.
  • Work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and emergencies.
  • Perform repetitive physical motions throughout the workday.
  • Safely lift, push, pull, or carry equipment up to 100 lbs. with assistance as required.
  • Work in temperature extremes and physically demanding conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical experience with electrical systems and circuitry
  • Some knowledge of diesel engines.
  • Completion of a two-year technical program in electrical or mechanical systems OR relevant military training/apprenticeship.
  • Two years of experience in maintenance, servicing, and repair of diesel/gaseous engines and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of: • Electrical, mechanical, thermal, and hydraulic principles.
  • Engine control systems and program logic controls (PLC) for power generation.
  • Electrical and mechanical safety protocols.
  • National Fire Protection Code compliance.
  • Lockout/tagout procedures
  • Proper use of electrical and mechanical personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Rigging standards and safe handling of heavy equipment.
