We serve over 5,000 children and families annually through our strategies that span across the life spectrum of birth through young adulthood, including Early Childhood, School Linked Services, Juvenile Justice, and Career Pathways. Safe Passages’ work is based on the premises that access to educational opportunity, health services, and family support should not be dictated by race or socio-economic status, and that healthy and supported youth are better prepared to learn and succeed.
Position Summary:
The Security Guard is responsible for maintaining a secure and welcoming environment for staff, visitors, and program participants. This position ensures the protection of the organization’s facilities, equipment, and people by monitoring site activity and responding to incidents. Ideal candidates will bring experience working with youth and marginalized communities and have the skills to de-escalate tense situations effectively.
Primary Responsibilities:

Monitor the entrance, verify identification of visitors, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.

Conduct regular patrols of the interior and exterior of the premises to identify potential safety risks and deter inappropriate activity.

Inspect the interior and exterior of the premises for any maintenance needs.

Respond promptly to alarms, disturbances, and emergency situations, including fire, medical, or behavioral crises, and coordinate with emergency responders when needed.

Use nonviolent conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.

Serve as a visible and approachable presence for staff, youth, and families.

Monitor and ensure functionality of security systems, including cameras and alarms, reporting malfunctions, or required maintenance promptly.

Lead safety drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation, earthquake), and provide support in evacuations, safety events, or emergencies.

Document detailed reports on any incidents and follow up with required reporting entities based on local, state, and federal mandates.

Maintain focus and remain alert throughout long shifts, ensuring the safety and security of the premises.

Support for other teams and other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:

Stand, Walk or Sit for Extended Periods: Ability to sit while driving a vehicle, stand or walk for long periods, often for several hours at a time, including traversing outdoor areas with uneven surfaces, without significant physical strain.

Climb Stairs: Regularly climb stairs and navigate multi-level buildings to perform patrols and check all areas.

Lift and Carry: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds to move or secure equipment, and assist with other duties as necessary.

Physical Endurance: Ability to withstand various weather conditions during outdoor patrols, including hot, cold, rainy, or windy weather.

Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle and operate security equipment, such as radios, keys, and locks.

Run or Move Quickly: Ability to sprint short distances if needed to respond quickly to emergencies or incidents.

Physical Stamina: Capable of working long hours while remaining alert and focused throughout the shift. De-escalate stressful situations with professionalism and patience.

Kneeling and Bending: Ability to kneel, crouch, and bend to check low-level areas, secure entrances, or assist in emergencies.

Vision and Hearing: Strong vision and hearing to observe surroundings, monitor security systems, and detect alarms or sounds of distress.
Qualifications:

Current security guard card/certification

CPR certification

Must have basic computer skills and ability to use a smartphone

Ability to perform necessary physical duties, i.e., walking, standing, and making necessary rounds

Proficiency in de-escalation techniques

Experience working with youth and individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure
Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual or multilingual

Previous experience in a school, community center, or nonprofit setting

Knowledge of safety regulations and local emergency response protocols

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 12:00 - 6:30 PM with the exception of some weekends and hours outside of the regular schedule as needed.
Compensation: $22-25/hr; (30-hours per week)
