What are the responsibilities and job description for the Residential Support Advocate position at Safe Harbor Crisis Center?
Residential Support Advocates (RSAs) are the frontlines of the services we offer, answering hotline calls and attending to emergency shelter clients’ immediate needs. They work in the weeds—providing direct, hands-on support to survivors in moments of crisis—while ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the shelter.
This role is a great opportunity for someone looking to enter the social work field and get their feet wet, gaining meaningful, real-world experience in crisis response, advocacy, and trauma-informed care.
Thursday-Sunday, 12pm-10pm
What you'll do:
- Answer the 24-hour hotline and support callers in crisis with information, resources, and shelter screening.
- Assist with client intake, safety planning, and coordination with on-call staff.
- Create a safe, welcoming environment by providing emotional support and responding to resident needs.
- Monitor resident and facility safety through routine checks and security procedures.
- Provide basic crisis intervention and conflict de-escalation.
- Maintain accurate documentation and communication logs while protecting client confidentiality.
- Support daily shelter operations, including light cleaning, laundry, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms.
- Work as part of a team, consulting supervisors as needed and assisting with special projects.
- Arrive on time, remain on-site for the full shift, and assist with holiday coverage as required.
What we're looking for:
- You are an effective communicator with the ability to resolve conflict, problem solve, and crisis manage.
- You are able to relate positively to those who are diverse in age, ethnicity, socioeconomic levels, beliefs, and lifestyles.
- You have a passion for Safe Harbor and our mission.
- You are able to respond empathetically to victims of crime to reduce levels of trauma and provide support during crisis intervention.
- You can build and maintain professional collaborative relationships within the community.
- You can pass a background investigation check (BCI) and have a valid Utah Drivers License.
