The Chemist is a professional level class. The Chemist performs metals, inorganic, and organic testing of wastewater, biogas, sludge, and drinking water. Incumbents in this class are expected to carry out varied assignments without detailed instructions or guidance and have the ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in performing their assigned duties. Incumbents often provide work direction and job specific instruction to assigned staff.
The Chemist receives general instructions on the scope of their assignments. Analysis and testing are completed in accordance with specific laboratory methods and procedures. The Chemist reports to the Environmental Laboratory Supervisor who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
AND
Two years of environmental laboratory experience in analytical chemistry.
Note: A master’s degree in chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
