Faith Based Community Organizer

Sacramento Area Congregations Together (SacACT)
Sacramento, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/15/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/10/2026

Organizational Background: Sacramento ACT empowers ordinary people to identify and change the conditions that create economic and racial injustice. Our shared faith values call us to envision and build a just and equitable community for all. At the center of our model of congregation-based community organizing is a belief in the potential for transformation – of people, institutions, and our larger culture. This belief stems directly from ACT’s roots in faith communities, and radiates throughout the organization, influencing the way ACT relates to public officials, to community members, and to one another.

Job Description:

Sacramento ACT (Area Congregations Together) is in search of a Community Organizer with 2-3 years of organizing experience to work with various community groups, congregations, and neighborhoods. You'll train leaders, identify local issues, and design campaigns to create systemic change. Bring your ability to understand people's stories deeply through a lens of faith, values, race, and power. Help build a sustainable organization that empowers communities and creates lasting change. This position reports to the Executive Director.

This individual is expected to be a full participant in achieving the ACT mission, with specific responsibility to:

  • Build and train grassroots organizing teams in congregations, public schools, apartment complexes and community groups in the art of community organizing so they can take action to change systemic inequities.
  • Train grassroots leaders to have an economic and racial analysis of the systemic inequities they face in their communities.
  • Work with a staff team and the PICO California Network in support of organization-wide state and national campaigns (immigration, housing, mass incarceration/violence prevention, economic justice)
  • Work with coalitions to build powerful campaigns and contribute to building movements across the region.
  • Utilize online tools to engage individuals, inform the broader community and amplify our analysis and message
  • Utilize company BLOCKS and other programs to enter data and reports on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Participate in staff development, staff meetings, and administrative activities, as required
  • Support fundraising efforts, as needed.
  • Plan and organize meetings both small and large with support of ACT Staff.
  • Travel locally around Sacramento County: about 25% of your day will be spent driving from location to location.
  • Statewide and Nationwide travel may be required for trainings and events

Minimum Qualifications:

We are seeking an individual who excels in relationship-building, has strong instincts of how to build teams and build power, and has exceptional follow-through on tasks and plans. Strong candidates should have:

  • Demonstrated experience and comfort working with people of faith, and faith communities.
  • Thorough understanding of the role of faith and spirituality in driving social change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A minimum of two-three years of work experience, academic preparation, and/or lived experience of the people we serve.
  • A self-directed, highly motivated orientation and an ability to provide positive, disciplined leadership in an unstructured environment
  • Experience working with community members to plan campaigns and achieve policy changes that improve community and people’s lives.
  • Understanding of their own interests and being able to challenge the status quo.
  • Imagination to connect personal stories to larger social structures and systems of power.
  • Create systems and organizations that can harness people's collective power effectively, building strong and lasting movements for change.
  • Experience/comfort leading events, for small 5-10 people or large 40-80 people, from start to finish.
  • Experience/comfort managing a high volume of calls and/or emails daily with respect and patience.
  • Experience/comfort using computers, email systems, and basic office equipment.
  • Possess a driver’s license, car insurance, and access to a reliable automobile to travel within the Sacramento region.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Capacity to think, speak, and write strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting our communities
  • Experience with and comfort using web-based video conferencing systems such as Zoom
