Leadership & Functional Competencies
Leadership Competencies
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Guides junior and mid-level engineers; sets design direction, reviews calculations/drawings, and elevates team capability.
- Project Ownership: Leads workstreams or small programs; scopes, estimates, schedules, manages risk, and drives on-time, on-budget delivery.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Aligns stakeholders across Electrical, Civil/Structural, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Field Services; communicates tradeoffs and decisions clearly.
- Decision Quality: Makes data-driven decisions balancing performance, cost, schedule, and safety; escalates risks early with mitigation plans.
- Continuous Improvement: Champions DFM/DFA, standardization, templates, and lessons learned; drives first-time-right outcomes and reduction of rework.
- HVAC Engineering: Advanced heat load and psychrometric analysis; air/coil/filtration selection; airflow management/containment strategies; redundancy (N 1/N N); sequences of operation for PLC/BAS.
- Piping & Fluid Systems: P&IDs, isometrics, line sizing, pump selection (system curves/NPSH), valve/strainer specs, pressure drop and transients; supports for transport and seismic considerations.
- Metal Forming & Fabrication: Sheet metal, weldments, and structural framing for modular enclosures/skids; tolerancing (GD&T), finishes, corrosion mitigation, and inspection criteria.
- Dynamic/Structural Analysis: Vibration, fatigue, shock/transport loads; interpretation and validation of FEA/CFD results; modal and stability considerations for rotating equipment and structures.
- Materials Engineering: Selection for strength, thermal behavior, corrosion/UV resistance, and manufacturability; knowledge of steels, aluminums, stainless alloys, coatings, and composites.
- Controls Integration: Defines control narratives, I/O, and sequences for mechanical subsystems; collaborates with PLC/BAS teams on sensors, actuators, VFDs, dampers, and alarming.
- CAD & Product Definition: Directs creation of 3D models and 2D drawings, BOMs, specs; enforces drafting standards, GD&T, and configuration management in PLM/PDM.
- Validation & Commissioning: Plans and executes FAT/SAT, airflow/thermal validation, pressure/leakage tests, and performance verification; leads structured RCA and CAPA.
Design & Development
- Lead mechanical design for modular products (enclosures, skids, racks), including HVAC architecture, airflow/thermal design, ducting, coil selection, and control sequences.
- Engineer piping and fluid systems: develop P&IDs/isometrics, perform line sizing and pump calculations, specify valves/accessories, and define supports/insulation.
- Architect sheet metal and structural assemblies for manufacturability and durability; specify weld symbols, finishes, hardware, and inspection methods.
- Perform or direct dynamic/mechanical analyses (vibration, fatigue, handling/transport loads); review and approve FEA/CFD studies and test correlation.
- Produce and approve calculation packages, design memos, models, drawings, specifications, and test plans.
- Drive ECO/MOC processes, redlines, as-built updates, and accurate metadata within PLM/PDM and document control systems.
- Create and maintain standard detail libraries, design checklists, and templates to improve repeatability and quality.
- Plan and manage engineering work across multiple concurrent projects; provide reliable estimates and status; identify and mitigate risks.
- Lead design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP, and manufacturability/constructability assessments; incorporate feedback into designs.
- Collaborate with vendors/OEMs: develop RFQs, conduct technical bid evaluations, review submittals/data sheets, and support make-vs-buy decisions with Supply Chain.
- Support fabrication and assembly on the factory floor; resolve build issues through clear dispositions (ECR/NCR) and rapid problem solving.
- Develop and execute FAT/SAT and commissioning procedures; support start-up and performance validation at customer sites as needed.
- Lead root-cause investigations and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to address quality, reliability, or performance gaps.
- Apply relevant codes, standards, and best practices (e.g., ASHRAE, AMCA, ASME, ASTM, AWS, AISC/ACI where applicable; customer and AHJ requirements).
- Ensure safety and reliability are designed in: guarding, lifting points, pressure boundaries, accessibility, service clearances, and life-cycle considerations.
- Contribute to reliability engineering (FMEA/RCM), spares strategy, and serviceability improvements.
Physical Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline) required.
- Master’s degree preferred (thermal sciences, mechanics, or related focus a plus).
