Designer III / Structural

Position Summary:
The Designer III – Structural provides advanced design and drafting support for high-voltage substation, transmission, and related EPC projects. This position is responsible for developing detailed structural drawings, 3D models, and construction documentation for steel structures, foundations, and equipment supports used in high-voltage facilities. The Designer III works with minimal supervision, coordinates with multidisciplinary teams, and ensures that design deliverables meet project, client, and regulatory requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for substation and transmission structures, including steel framing, equipment supports, cable trenching, and foundations.
- Prepare plans, elevations, sections, and fabrication details for structural steel and reinforced concrete.
- Support the structural design of HV substation components such as control buildings, steel gantries, transformer foundations, and equipment pads.
- Coordinate design activities with electrical, civil, and mechanical disciplines to ensure integration and accuracy of the overall design.
- Apply applicable codes and standards (e.g., AISC, ACI, ASCE 7, NESC, IEEE, IEC) to ensure compliance with engineering and safety requirements.
- Review drawings and models prepared by junior designers or subcontractors for accuracy and adherence to company and client standards.
- Participate in design and model reviews, constructability reviews, and clash detection sessions.
- Generate and manage BOMs (Bills of Materials) and ensure design deliverables meet schedule and quality requirements.
- Collaborate closely with project engineers and project managers to define scope, estimate design hours, and track progress.
- Mentor junior design staff and support implementation of BIM and CAD standards within the structural discipline.
- Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or diploma in Structural Design, Drafting, or Engineering Technology (or equivalent work experience).
- 6 years of experience in structural design for power delivery or EPC projects (substations, switchyards, transmission, or generation facilities).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, or Smart 3D; familiarity with BIM 360, Civil 3D, or Navisworks is a plus.
- Strong understanding of structural design principles for steel and concrete in high-voltage environments.
- Experience with foundation design layouts, steel framing, and equipment support structures specific to substations and transmission yards.
- Knowledge of grounding, conduit routing, and equipment clearances as they relate to structural layouts.

- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver within tight EPC project schedules.
