Overview
Our client is shutting down several manufacturing facilities and needs a hands-on Contract Project Engineer to support the Engineering Director. This person will lead the process of safely shutting down and disconnecting equipment and utility systems across multiple sites.
Note: this role is NOT about tearing down or removing equipment — that's handled by a separate team. This role is about making sure everything is properly shut off, drained, cleaned out, documented, and safe before it gets handed over for removal.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the shutdown of facility utilities such as HVAC, water, chilled water, gas, and electrical systems.
- Review utility drawings to ensure active production areas are not affected.
- Coordinate and supervise contractors/vendors performing shutdown and isolation work.
- Oversee the shutdown of manufacturing equipment and ensure equipment is drained, purged, cleaned, and made safe.
- Update SAP records, retire equipment, close maintenance activities, and update spare parts information.
- Complete all required shutdown and decommissioning documentation.
- Lead and verify Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities.
- Confirm equipment and utility systems are in a zero-energy state before handoff.
- Ensure contractors follow all site safety requirements.
- Provide onsite support to the Engineering Director and report project progress, issues, and delays.
- Monitor vendor work to ensure it is completed safely, correctly, and on schedule.
Required Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in facility maintenance or facility engineering.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Hands-on experience with LOTO and hazardous energy control.
- Comfortable working on the manufacturing floor and supervising vendors.
- Strong communication, documentation, and coordination skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with facility shutdowns or decommissioning projects.
- Pharmaceutical or GMP-regulated facility experience.
- Experience using SAP for maintenance and asset management.
- Experience with GMP documentation.
