Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly knowledgeable Safety Manager to oversee and maintain safety and regulatory compliance for our over-the-road trucking operation. The Safety Manager will report directly to the Safety Director and will be responsible for ensuring that our drivers, equipment, and operations comply with all applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and state and federal regulations.

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS), Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), DOT regulations, driver qualification requirements, drug and alcohol compliance, vehicle inspections, accident prevention, and FMCSA safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Report directly to the Safety Director and assist with the company's overall safety and compliance program.
• Manage day-to-day safety and DOT compliance activities for the OTR fleet.
• Maintain compliance with all applicable FMCSA, DOT, and state and federal regulations.
• Maintain an extensive working knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
• Monitor and audit ELD records and driver logs for accuracy and compliance.
• Identify HOS violations and work with drivers to correct violations and prevent recurrence.
• Maintain and audit Driver Qualification Files (DQFs).
• Monitor driver licenses, medical certifications, MVRs, PSP records, and required documentation.
• Manage and monitor the company's DOT drug and alcohol testing program.
• Conduct driver orientation and ongoing safety training, with a focus on pre-trip inspections and able to teach/train pre-trip inspections
• Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and cargo/property damage.
• Review roadside inspection reports and ensure violations are addressed promptly.
• Monitor vehicle inspection, maintenance, and DVIR compliance.
• Monitor CSA/SMS performance and identify areas requiring corrective action.
• Assist with FMCSA/DOT audits and compliance reviews.
• Maintain accurate safety and compliance records.
• Communicate safety policies and regulatory changes to drivers and management.
• Work closely with dispatch, operations, maintenance, and management to identify and resolve safety and compliance issues.
• Immediately escalate serious safety or regulatory issues to the Safety Director.
• Stay current on changes to FMCSA regulations, DOT requirements, HOS rules, and transportation safety standards.

Required Qualifications

• Class A CDL Holder or previous holder (current preferred)
• Previous experience as a Safety Manager, DOT Compliance Manager, Safety Director, or similar position within the trucking industry.
• Extensive knowledge of FMCSA and DOT rules and regulations.
• Extensive knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and ELD compliance.
• Strong understanding of Driver Qualification File requirements.
• Knowledge of DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Experience conducting safety and compliance audits.
• Ability to interpret and apply FMCSA regulations to real-world trucking operations.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while following direction from the Safety Director.
• Proficiency with computers and transportation/ELD/safety software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience as an OTR Class A CDL driver.
• Experience preparing a motor carrier for an FMCSA/DOT audit or compliance review.
• Experience with ELD and fleet-management systems. (Samsara preferred)
• Experience investigating commercial motor vehicle accidents.
• Safety or DOT compliance certification.
• Previous experience managing safety programs for an OTR fleet.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a hands-on trucking safety professional, not a general workplace safety manager. The ideal candidate understands the day-to-day realities of OTR trucking and has the knowledge and experience necessary to effectively manage DOT compliance.

The successful candidate must be able to confidently review driver logs, identify HOS violations, understand ELD records, audit driver qualification files, investigate accidents, review roadside inspections, interpret FMCSA regulations, and communicate effectively with professional drivers and management.

A valid Class A CDL is a highly recommended for this position.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
