RPG Programmer

Summary

The Programmer is responsible for the design, development, testing, documentation, and maintenance of the business applications that run SAS’s core distribution systems. This is an entry-level position within the application development area of the Information Systems team. SAS’s core ERP, warehouse, and financial systems run on the IBM i (AS/400) platform, so this role centers on RPG development against a Db2 for i database, with mentoring and on-the-job training provided by senior members of the team.

Essential Functions

• Write, modify, test, and debug RPG programs on the IBM i (AS/400) platform that support SAS’s distribution, warehouse, and financial systems.
• Use a 5250 terminal emulator to navigate the IBM i environment, access and compile source, run programs, and troubleshoot issues.
• Write and tune SQL against the Db2 for i database to retrieve, update, and report on business data.
• Accurately implement software enhancements and new software systems.
• Working from defined specifications, develop programs and changes that impact integral SAS systems, with review and guidance from senior developers.
• Write, de-bug, diagram, and create flow-charts, codes, documents, and programs.
• Maintain program source in the department’s version control process and follow the established standards for documentation set by management.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours listed are general hours and may be altered as needed. Additional hours may be required to fulfill job duties and position expectations.

Education and Experience

• Must have the verbal, quantitative, and interpersonal skills normally acquired through the completion of an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
• Must have a minimum of one year of hands-on programming experience. Internship, co-op, apprenticeship, or substantial academic project work is acceptable.
• Must have formal education and/or practical experience in RPG. Any dialect is acceptable, including RPG II, RPG III / RPG/400, RPG IV (ILE), and free-format RPG.
• Must have education and/or experience writing SQL on IBM i (Db2 for i).
• Must be able to work productively in a 5250 terminal emulator (green screen) environment.
• Acceptable equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
