The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, analyzing project requirements, and supporting project managers and executives in bidding, planning, and execution. Primary Responsibilities
- Estimating & Bidding
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for excavation, grading, utilities, site work, and solar field installations.
- Analyzing requirement documents, blueprints and project plans to gain a thorough understanding of the project including scope and requirements.
- Preparing material estimates and cost estimates for the product or service
- Creating labor estimates for any project
- Incorporate site-specific challenges such as traffic control, multi-trade collaboration, and environmental factors into estimates
- Presenting prepared estimates to management and other stakeholders
- Compiling and recording actual costs
- Develop bid packages and proposals that reflect competitive pricing strategies.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations as required.
- Project Analysis
- Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, underground utilities, foundations, and site infrastructure.
- Assess soil conditions, site constraints, and logistics to identify cost implications.
- Evaluate risks, contingencies, and value engineering opportunities.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to align estimates with execution plans.
- Support contract negotiations by providing accurate cost data.
- Maintain relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and clients.
- Cost Tracking & Reporting
- Compare estimated costs against actual project costs to improve accuracy for future estimates.
- Provide regular reporting and forecasting to leadership.
- Support change order pricing and scope modifications.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred).
- 3–7 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably in excavation, site work, or renewable energy/solar projects.
- Strong understanding of earthwork, utility installation, grading, stormwater systems, and large-scale solar field infrastructure.
- Technical Skills
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam or similar).
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Procore and other construction management tools.
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple estimates simultaneously.
