Job Description

Ryan is seeking an experienced and unwavering safety leader to serve as the Director of Energy Control for our Mission Critical sector. Reporting to the Senior Director of Safety, Mission Critical, this individual will be the single point of accountability for the development, implementation, and governance of Ryan’s comprehensive Energy Control Program (ECP).

This leadership role is directly responsible for safeguarding all personnel from hazardous energy across our portfolio of data center, semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing projects. The Director will lead a dedicated team of Chief Energy Marshals and provide expert oversight for all electrical, mechanical, and high energy-source pre-energization, energization, and commissioning activities. The ideal candidate is a subject matter expert with deep field experience who can drive a culture of zero-energy-state execution and absolute compliance. Energy source*.

This opportunity would offer the flexibility to report to any number of our offices in Atlanta, Columbus, Ohio, Phoenix, Dallas, others. There will be associated travel 25% to 33%.

What You Can Expect To Do

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Ownership And Strategic Governance

  • Assume ultimate ownership of the Ryan Companies Energy Control Program (ECP), responsible for its continuous improvement, implementation, and enforcement across all Mission Critical projects.
  • Serve as the company's leading subject matter expert on hazardous energy control, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), electrical safety, and NFPA 70E compliance.
  • Drive the strategic evolution of the ECP to address new technologies, client requirements, and lessons learned, ensuring the program remains best-in-class.

Leadership And Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 5-10 direct-report Chief Energy Marshals, ensuring technical excellence and consistent performance across all project sites.
  • Establish and govern the qualification standards, training requirements, and performance management for all ECP-related roles, including Deputy Energy Marshals, LOTO Managers/Coordinators, and Designated Switching Crews.
  • Work with key trade partners (Electrical, Mechanical, Low Voltage/Controls, Commissioning teams, Client, etc.) to develop and confirm compliance of their energy control programs to meet Ryan’s program requirements.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, proactive risk identification, and unwavering adherence to safety protocols within the Energy Control team and among all trade partners.

Technical Oversight And Field Execution

  • Provide expert oversight and final authority on all high-risk energy control activities, including medium/high-voltage switching, complex group LOTO, and initial energization sequences.
  • Govern the Method of Procedure (MOP) and Action Plan (AP) process, ensuring all procedures are rigorously planned, reviewed, and executed without deviation.
  • Oversee all energy-related safety aspects of project commissioning, from pre-functional checks and startup to integrated systems testing and load banking.

Compliance, Auditing, And Incident Investigation

  • Own and direct the ECP compliance auditing program, ensuring a robust cadence of daily, weekly, and quarterly audits are performed and documented.
  • Analyze audit findings to identify systemic trends, program deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement; drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Lead all root cause analysis investigations for any energy-related incidents or near-misses, and institutionalize lessons learned across the organization.

Training And Stakeholder Engagement

  • Oversee the ECP training program to ensure all site personnel—from Ryan team members to trade partners and vendors—receive the required level of training for their roles.
  • Act as the senior liaison with client safety representatives, external auditors, and jurisdictional authorities on all matters related to hazardous energy control.
  • Partner with preconstruction and operations leaders to ensure that ECP principles are integrated at the earliest stages of project planning and subcontractor procurement.

What We Expect You Should Possess

  • Experience: A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience dedicated to electrical safety and hazardous energy control within complex industrial construction environments.
  • Sector Expertise: Direct and extensive experience in the Data Center, Semiconductor, or Advanced Manufacturing sectors is required.
  • Prior Roles: Must have held senior leadership roles with direct program ownership, such as LOTO Program Manager, Electrical Safety Manager, or Chief Energy Marshal on large-scale, complex projects.
  • Technical Knowledge: Expert-level, demonstrable knowledge of OSHA standards (1910.147, Subpart S), NFPA 70E ("Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace"), and NETA standards.
  • Leadership: Proven experience recruiting, building, and leading high-performing teams of safety professionals in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Program Development: Demonstrated history of developing, implementing, and auditing comprehensive, large-scale Lockout/Tagout and energy control programs from the ground up.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is strongly preferred.
  • Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) are highly desirable.

  • Ability to work independently and productively with others.
  • Solid working understanding of OSHA related to the construction industry.
  • Good working knowledge of 3rd party contractor management data bases such as ISNet & Avetta.
