Clear communication is essential to helping children and families access meaningful early intervention services. As a Translator, you'll help bridge communication between English-speaking practitioners and families who speak another language. You'll provide accurate, timely interpretation during evaluations, assessments, service sessions, and Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) development while maintaining the confidentiality, professionalism, and sensitivity that families deserve. If you're fluent in English and Spanish, have strong communication skills, and enjoy supporting children and families, this role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the delivery of early intervention services.

As a Translator, a typical day might include the following:

  • Provide consecutive interpretation during initial evaluations, assessments, direct service sessions, and IFSP development as required.
  • Accurately interpret all information communicated between the child, family, and practitioner during sessions.
  • Speak, read, and write fluently in English and at least one additional language while accurately conveying the style and tone of the original communication.
  • Work closely with assigned practitioners to schedule and confirm services and support communication related to future sessions.
  • Interpret session notes and confirm upcoming sessions through group text messages or conference calls as needed.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and provide interpretation related to early intervention services and other information associated with those services.
  • Maintain sensitivity to each family's personal circumstances while protecting confidentiality and adhering to the organization's code of conduct.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the office through email, text, and telephone and respond promptly to requests for information.
  • Accurately record service time and frequency, obtain required signatures, and submit billing information according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete and submit required paperwork accurately and within established productivity and volume requirements.
  • Attend required trainings and participate in Telehealth services via video as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility with scheduling based on the needs of the department and the families served.
  • Travel in a personal vehicle to and from the natural environments where assigned families receive services.

This role might be for you if:

  • You enjoy helping children and families access services by making communication easier and more effective.
  • You're fluent in English and another language and can communicate accurately, clearly, and quickly in both languages.
  • You have the ability to convey not only the words being spoken, but also the style and tone of the original communication.
  • You're compassionate and sensitive to the individual circumstances of the families you serve.
  • You understand the importance of confidentiality and maintaining professional boundaries.
  • You're organized and dependable when managing schedules, documentation, billing information, and communication with the office.
  • You're flexible and able to adjust your schedule to meet the needs of families and the department.
  • You're comfortable working independently in family homes and other natural environments as well as participating in Telehealth services.
  • You have strong attention to detail and take pride in completing documentation accurately and on time.

To be considered for this role, you must have a high school diploma or GED, or another qualification deemed acceptable by NJ Department of Health personnel standards for early intervention personnel. Candidates must speak, read, and write fluently in English and at least one additional language (Spanish required) and demonstrate the ability to accurately interpret spoken communication while maintaining the style and tone of the original language. Candidates must be able to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and sensitivity to families' personal circumstances. A valid driver's license and required insurance are also required, as the position involves travel in a personal vehicle to and from the natural environments of assigned families.
