Lab Assistant

Job Overview:

The Laboratory Assistant position performs all clerical and pre-analytical specimen preparation and processing duties associated with the proper functioning of the laboratory including specimen handling and processing, test orders, recording, filing, dispatching patient records, and telephone responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

• Accurately records patient demographics, physician information, and test requests according to established laboratory protocol.
• Dispatches requests for blood collection to phlebotomists in a timely manner.
• Effectively and promptly communicates Panic/Stat results of testing by telephone in accordance with laboratory policy, and accurately documents these communications.
• Ensures that the patient has a physician s order for the tests to be performed.
• Enters orders into the computer as appropriate.
• Faxes patient s reports for MD or physician offices as required.
• Identifies all patients and specimens in compliance with all hospital and regulatory requirements.
• Performs clerical duties and responsibilities.
• Prepares specimens for testing according to individual test protocols. This includes centrifugation, separation of serum, plasma, cells, or other fluids needed for testing; and preservation of the prepared specimen in the proper environment.
• Provides customers with appropriate containers and instructions for the collection of specimens.
• Receives specimens, accessions them, and distributes to the appropriate sections of the laboratory.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
