An Industrial Refrigeration Technician specializes in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of large-scale, high-capacity industrial cooling systems. Unlike residential refrigeration or HVAC techs, these technicians work in manufacturing plants, large commercial buildings, and industrial facilities, often servicing centrifugal chillers.
Key Responsibilities
- Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on industrial Refrigeration equipment, including cleaning condensers, changing filters, checking refrigerant levels, and lubricating pumps and motors to prevent system failures.
- Troubleshooting and Repair: Diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant-related issues in large systems, such as replacing compressors, fans, and thermostats.
- System Overhaul: Disassemble, clean, inspect, and rebuild/overhaul compressors, pumps, and gearboxes.
- Compliance and Safety: Adhere to EPA regulations regarding refrigerant recovery and disposal, as well as OSHA safety standards (lockout/tagout).
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed logs of maintenance, service calls, parts usage, and system performance.
- Customer Service: Interface with facility managers, explain technical issues, and provide recommendations for system upgrades or efficiency improvements.
Key Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED; vocational or technical training in HVAC/R is preferred.
- Experience: 2β5 years of experience in industrial or heavy commercial Refrigeration, particularly with chiller systems.
- Certifications: EPA Section 608 Certification (required), with NATE or HVAC Excellence certifications being a plus.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, 3-phase electricity, motors, and controls.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in confined spaces, on rooftops, in varying temperatures, and lift heavy equipment (50 lbs.).
- License: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Required Proficiencies
- Proficiency in reading blueprints, P & I diagrams, piping schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Repairing and troubleshooting all types of refrigeration circuits both mechanically and electrically.
- Ability to use precision measurement tools and hand/power tools.
Work Environment
- These positions often involve traveling to various job sites, working on-call, and potentially working weekends or nights.
