Assistant Store Manager
Batteries Plus – Central Virginia (Midlothian / Magnolia Green Area)
Position Summary
The Assistant Store Manager is a revenue-driving leader responsible for helping execute the store’s retail and commercial growth strategy while maintaining operational excellence.
This is not a passive retail role. This is a specialty sales leadership position inside a fast-growing, family-owned franchise focused on problem solving, technical expertise, and measurable performance.
The Assistant Manager supports the Store Manager in achieving monthly sales goals, commercial growth targets, margin objectives, and operational standards while developing leadership capability to eventually run a store independently.
Core Objectives
- Drive monthly revenue and gross margin performance
- Lead by example in specialty retail selling
- Support aggressive commercial (B2B) growth
- Maintain operational accuracy and inventory integrity
- Develop associates into confident problem-solvers and sales professionals
Revenue & Sales LeadershipSales Execution
- Actively sell on the floor daily — this is a production role, not a supervisory-only role
- Execute Good / Better / Best selling strategies
- Drive attachment metrics (alkaline, protection kits, service bundles, etc.)
- Confidently present premium upgrades (AGM vs flooded, protection kits, service bundles, etc.)
- Ensure pricing integrity and margin awareness on every transaction
Commercial (B2B) Support
- Identify and develop new commercial opportunities inside the store
- Support outside sales efforts and account development
- Assist with commercial account setup, pricing, and fulfillment
- Ensure delivery accuracy and timeliness
- Help maintain commercial pipeline follow-up
Customer Experience
- Demonstrate and coach a “problem-solving first” mentality
- Maintain authority and confidence in product recommendations
- Ensure technical work is completed correctly the first time
- Resolve escalated customer concerns professionally
Operational LeadershipInventory & Merchandising
- Maintain accurate inventory counts and system integrity
- Manage receiving, purchasing, and special orders
- Monitor obsolete inventory, RTVs, and core recovery compliance
- Execute planograms and merchandising resets
- Maintain a fully stocked and recovery-ready sales floor
Shrink & Compliance
- Monitor loss prevention and shrink control
- Ensure core charge compliance and recovery
- Maintain recycling programs within local/state/federal regulations
- Promptly report unusual activity
Store Standards
- Enforce housekeeping, stocking, backstock organization, and tagging accuracy
- Maintain “full store set” standards
- Ensure pricing and signage accuracy
Technical Execution
Assistant Managers are expected to be highly competent in:
- Automotive battery testing and installation
- AGM vs flooded diagnostics and upselling
- Smartphone screen repairs and device services
- Key cutting and key fob programming
- Service order management and fulfillment accuracy
Technical mistakes cost margin and reputation — accuracy and confidence are mandatory.
Leadership & Team Development
- Assist in hiring and onboarding new associates
- Train associates in selling techniques and technical services
- Delegate tasks and validate completion
- Enforce scheduling discipline and operational expectations
- Lead shifts independently when Store Manager is absent
- Model professionalism, urgency, and accountability
We expect leaders who raise the standard — not manage to the minimum.
Store Safety & Facility
- Maintain PPE compliance and safety standards
- Address facility maintenance issues promptly
- Enforce uniform and appearance standards
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1–2 years retail experience (specialty or technical retail preferred)
- Demonstrated sales performance history
- Ability to analyze business metrics and adjust behavior accordingly
- Comfortable holding team members accountable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license preferred
Physical Requirements
- Regular standing and walking
- Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs (occasionally more)
- Use of hand tools, testing equipment, soldering equipment, and electronics tools
- Exposure to automotive environments, battery acid, and outdoor conditions
- Use of PPE including gloves, goggles, steel-toe footwear
