Rutland City Public Schools - Special Educator Job Description Location: Rutland Intermediate School Reports to: Building Principal Position Summary Rutland City Public Schools is seeking a dedicated, collaborative, and student-centered Special Educator to provide direct instruction, case management, and support to students in grades 3–6. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring that students with diverse learning needs are able to access the general education curriculum and make meaningful academic and social-emotional progress. This position involves working closely with students who present academic, behavioral, and developmental challenges, and requires a strong commitment to inclusive practices, relationship-building, and individualized instruction. The Special Educator will be an integral member of a student-centered team, collaborating with general educators, interventionists, service providers, and families to design and implement effective supports. Responsibilities
  • Provide direct specialized instruction to students in individual and small-group settings based on IEP goals
  • Serve as a case manager, ensuring compliance with all special education requirements, timelines, and documentation
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Use assessment data and progress monitoring to inform instruction and adjust interventions
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support inclusive practices and differentiated instruction
  • Develop and implement behavior support plans (BSPs/BIPs) for students requiring additional behavioral supports
  • Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and team-based problem-solving discussions
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, data collection, and reporting
  • Communicate effectively with families and caregivers regarding student progress and programming
  • Contribute to a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment for all students
  • Participate actively in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes and team meetings
Core Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Vermont Educator License with endorsement in Special Education for the assigned subject area and grade level, as issued by the Vermont Agency of Education, or have the ability to obtain
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate students through effective instructional practices
  • Experience working with students with academic, behavioral, and developmental challenges
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and maintain accurate documentation
  • Ability to use data to inform instructional decisions and monitor student progress
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods and move throughout the facility as required to perform job duties
  • Ability to sit, bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions related to teaching tasks
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families in person and through various communication methods
  • Ability to operate standard classroom and office equipment, including computers and instructional technology
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance
  • Schedule and duties may vary based on assignment and school needs
