Dog Kennel Assistant

Ruff Haus Kennels
Pine, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 5/28/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 7/28/2026

Seeking two individuals that have excellent communication skills with clients as well as a passion for animals. Experience is a plus, but we are willing to train. MUST be comfortable around dogs (and cats) and MUST have basic knowledge and experience handling dogs.

Some Job descripition include:

Handling of dogs and cats in a professional and compassionate manner. Be comfortable with pets with special needs, large sized dogs (130 lbs and larger) and handling working breeds (higher drive) is absolutely necessary.

Cleaning kennels on a daily basis, more than once a day (sanitizing kennels, cage bank waiting areas, scrubbing bathing rooms, sanitizing floors, counters, walls and bathrooms). Being able to walk dogs and follow very specific instructions in regards to handling dogs and moving to different sections of the facility, as well as walking dogs safely.

Being able to administer medication (including shots) if/when needed - ie Diabetic animals.

Feeding of animals according to EXACT instructions from the owners. Following a very specific timeline for medication, feeding and following boarding notes on multiple family dogs housed together.

Bathing dogs and cats to completion - which includes being able to handle DIFFICULT dogs (and cats). This position will require training, if candidate has not already worked in a grooming facility as a professional bather. Advancement opportunities will be offered to individuals that would be interested in becoming a groomer. Including paid training at an offsite location, paid equipment upkeep (sharpening scissors, blades, etc).

Cleaning the reception/facility (in addition to kennels). This includes maintaining all retail, making sure it is clean, dusted weekly and kept looking neat and professional. Keeping track of inventory a must.

Must be able to work well with others and be able to multi-task INDEPENDANTLY, according to time schedules. We have very specific pick up and drop off times and kennels must be sanitized and animals fed/medication administered on time, before scheduled pick-up/drop offs. These are live animals, that rely on the staff to be here, especially if medicaiton must be administered at certain times of the day. Please take note of this, so you know the importance of being punctual and dependable, before applying. We have an online system that enables you to immediately reach out to other employees to 'switch' shifts or 'get coverage' for days you are responsible for! So, we CANNOT accept constant lateness and days taken off without coverage - the animals at our facility are RELYING on you to be there to care for them.

You must be able to LIFT dogs, at least up to 50 lbs. You must be comfortable with dogs and not fearful. We are willing to train all employess on how to handle all dogs that come in (puppies, fearful dogs, potentially aggressive animals, cats - but we cannot 'train' you on being comfortable around animals - this is something you either are or are not). Applying for a position that requires you to be around animals full time is not a position for someone that is fearful of dogs. It puts the candidate and the dogs in an unsafe situation. Safety is our very first priority here.

Be able to adapt to a fast pace environment (spring break, summers and holidays) and being capable to walk and handle dogs that WILL PULL you is an absolute must. Also, owners are sometimes scared and nervous, when dropping off their pets. Candidates must be able to deal with owners in a compassionate and confident manner, to help put their minds at ease.

Schedule is not set days (fyi) and times will absolutely vary, depending on the weekly grooming and boarding schedule. If you have a p/t job already, that is set days, we are more than willing to work around your days if you would like to add to your existing schedule. But keep in mind, you must be available on some weekends and holidays. It will be a rotating schedule around employees to be fair to entire staff. Please remember, weekends, summers and holidays are our busiest time of the year. If you do not think you can commit to this type of schedule regularly, this is not the job for you.

We are also looking for a P/T GROOMER WITH EXPERIENCE. We will check references for this position, if you have worked at other grooming salons and a portfolio of your work would be ideal. This position will be paid either by commission or salary. Which can be disussed and agreed upon at time of interview.
