Position Summary
The Special Education Building Coordinator at Kennebunk High School serves as the on-site instructional and compliance leader for special education services in a comprehensive high school setting.
This position functions as the primary liaison between the Special Services Department, building administration, faculty, families, and community partners. The Coordinator ensures students with disabilities receive appropriate supports in the least restrictive environment while maintaining compliance with all state and federal requirements.
At the high school level, this role places a strong emphasis on transition planning, graduation pathways, career readiness, and post-secondary preparation, including coordination with outside agencies and vocational supports.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field (or in progress).
Valid Maine Special Education Administrator Certification (282 endorsement) or eligibility.
Minimum of 3 years of special education teaching experience (high school experience strongly preferred).
Prior leadership, coordination, or supervisory experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of IDEA, FAPE, LRE, Section 504, and Maine DOE special education regulations.
Experience with secondary transition planning (age 14 ), graduation requirements, and diploma pathways.
Familiarity with MTSS/RTI and secondary academic structures, scheduling, and credit systems.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced school environment.

Essential Responsibilities
Special Education Leadership & Compliance
Serve as LEA representative for IEP meetings and ensure procedural compliance.
Facilitate high-quality IEP development, implementation, and documentation.
Monitor timelines for evaluations, eligibility, annual reviews, and transition plans.
Ensure compliance with state and federal special education regulations.
Transition Planning & Postsecondary Readiness
Oversee transition planning for students beginning at age 14.
Coordinate post-secondary planning with students, families, and outside agencies.
Support career readiness, vocational programming, and college/post-secondary pathways.
Facilitate connections with community resources, vocational rehabilitation, and higher education partners.
Staff Support & Professional Practice
Provide instructional coaching and supervision to special education staff.
Support onboarding and mentoring of new staff members.
Collaborate with administration on staffing, scheduling, and program development.
Support ongoing professional learning aligned to instructional and compliance needs.
Inclusive Practices & Instructional Support
Promote inclusive practices and least restrictive environment decision-making.
Collaborate with general education teachers on co-teaching and differentiation.
Support student access to rigorous coursework, accommodations, and graduation pathways.
Participate in MTSS/RTI processes to support student success and placement decisions.
Family & Agency Collaboration
Serve as primary point of contact for families regarding special education services.
Support clear and consistent communication between school and home.
Coordinate services with outside agencies and community providers.
Data & Program Improvement
Monitor student progress, IEP goal attainment, and service delivery data.
Analyze trends to inform instructional and programmatic decisions.
Support state and district compliance reporting requirements.
Physical Demands
Frequent movement throughout the school building.
Ability to respond to student needs in varied environments.
Occasional lifting or assisting of students up to 50 lbs as needed.
Participation in crisis prevention and intervention training.
