SUMMARY:  Repairs and maintains all district diesel and gasoline vehicles by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Reads job order and observes and listens to school buses or other vehicles in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures.
  • Installs new ignition systems, aligns front wheels, changes or recharges batteries, and replaces transmissions and other parts.
  • Overhauls gas or diesel engines.
  • Schedules and/or performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on all vehicles.
  • Performs safety inspections.
  • Maintains garage parts inventory, equipment and supply inventory.
  • Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on school bus or other vehicles, and makes adjustments.
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to vehicle requirements and related areas.
  • Lubricating moving parts and drives repaired school bus or buses to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
  • Must have or be able to obtain ASE certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Must have or obtain a CDL Class B with School Bus Endorsement within 6 months of hire date.
  • Maintain motorpool vehicles as needed.
  • Assist with substitute bus driving as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid CDL driver’s license required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee frequently is required to stand, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.

 

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

  • Salary: Per PSE –Salary Schedule
  • Hours: 8 hours per day
