The Lower School

Guided by the mission of the school and Rowland Hall’s strategic plan, the Lower School is a place of joyful learning. The Lower School faculty is composed of caring and knowledgeable teachers who are passionate about elementary education, skillful in creating learning environments in which young students can thrive, and committed to continuous and collaborative professional growth. Lower School teachers, students, and families value the strong sense of community established in grades 1-5, and the unique learning experiences that the school provides each student, via the classroom curriculum, through our Specialties Program (Science, TREC, Art, Music, PE, Spanish, Library), and in our Ethical Education and Social-Emotional Learning Program.

Position Summary

Lower School Associate Teachers work with children across multiple grade levels and sections, providing individual student support, small group facilitation, and student supervision under the direction of the Lower School administration and academic team. The Associate Teacher position is ideal for early service educators who are passionate about teaching elementary aged children, growing their craft, and contributing to a dynamic, student-centered learning environment. Each Associate Teacher will be assigned to a subset of grades (eg: 3-5) and will ideally remain in the position for 2 years. Associate teachers will have opportunities to observe and be observed, participate in instructional coaching, and engage in professional development opportunities tailored to their individual growth goals. .

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Work with teachers and administration to create supportive and collaborative classroom environments using age appropriate classroom management skills and strategies.
• Build strong relationships with all students in assigned grade level classrooms and provide on the spot support for children experiencing moments of challenge
• Participate as a member of a collaborative, cooperative Lower School teaching team - sharing information and strategies to sustain a healthy classroom community
• Support students in transitions in and around the Lower School throughout the day and accompany classes in specialty spaces as needed
• Participate in daily recess and lunch supervision with assigned grade levels
• Deliver weekly social/emotional curricular lessons to each section of assigned grade levels in collaboration with the Beginning and Lower School Social/Emotional Support Counselor
• Participate in curricular planning meetings and other professional meetings as needed
• Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual 
• Other duties as required

Skills and Requirements

• A love of and respect for elementary-aged students as learners and people, through difficult and joyful moments alike 
• Strong communication skills
• Knowledge of developmentally-appropriate practices with elementary students
• Experience with or desire to begin working with multiple populations, including students, parents, faculty, and staff
• Cultural competency both inside and outside of the classroom
• Flexibility and readiness to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and demands on attention
• Good cheer and warmth, balanced by demonstrated professionalism, responsibility, and sound judgment

• Work as part of a collaborative team.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefit eligible, 0.8 FTE position beginning August 1, 2026. This position reports to the Assistant Head of Lower School. Compensation is based on level of education and years of relevant experience.
