The Department of Philosophy & World Religions at Rowan University is seeking to hire a 10-month, full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty member with an appointment to begin Sept. 1, 2026. We are specifically interested in candidates who will develop a research program in Biomedical Ethics. A Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field is required. Candidates will be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor levels.

The successful candidate will have a track record or potential to establish and sustain a strong research program in biomedical ethics, contributing to the development of a research cluster in the medical and health humanities within the Ric Edelman College of Communication, Humanities & Social Sciences. There are extensive opportunities for research collaboration—and for pursuing competitive, grant-funded projects—within the Department and College, as well as across Rowan University. Collaborative pathways extend to the Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences, which includes the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Salva School of Nursing and Health Professions, and the School of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. In addition, partnerships with the Rowan-Virtua Institute for Health Equity, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Transplantation, the College of Science & Mathematics, the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and its Edward D. Viner Center for Humanism , and the Ric Edelman’s College and the university’s health-focused research clusters and clinical partners. Together, these units create a rich, interconnected ecosystem that advances research and innovation across health, medicine, and the medical humanities while strengthening medical education, health-professions training, interdisciplinary inquiry, and community-engaged scholarship.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, engaging professor with clear evidence of teaching excellence. In addition to teaching in their research area, the candidate should be able to complement and build upon some of the following department strengths and priorities: history and philosophy of science; social and political philosophy (including gender, race, and queer studies); epistemology and philosophy of mind; history of philosophy, including non-western philosophy; and other areas in ethics and applied ethics.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to securing research support through competitive public grants and private foundation funding, as well as to service endeavors in the Department, College, and University. Priorities include:

  • Developing courses and interdisciplinary programs in biomedical ethics or related areas, such as the ethics of technology, philosophy of medicine and science, disability ethics, and reproductive ethics
  • Coordinating events on these topics, including research talks, public lectures, conferences, and student-focused programming
  • Effectively recruiting students and contributing to the continued growth of our department majors, minors, and certificate programs
  • Securing extramural funding to support research, programming, and interdisciplinary initiatives in these areas

Salary

In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is:

  • Assistant Professor: AFT: Range 22-25
  • Associate Professor: AFT: Range 26-29
  • Full Professor: AFT: Range 30-33

with placement within the range determined by the candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors. Appropriate start-up packages may be available.
