GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs various painting maintenance and finishing work on interior and/or exterior surfaces.


EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
? Assists in the coordination of the paint schedule.
? Performs routine and moderately complex maintenance and repairs on interior and
exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, and various equipment and facilities.
? Plans and prepares all facets of painting projects, including measuring, cleaning,
caulking, masking, scaffolding assembly, spackling, floating mud, mixing, and preparing
paints and finishes.
? Removes old paint and finishes from surfaces. Prepares surfaces using sandblaster,
sandpaper, wire brushes, steel wool, and/or scraper, and stripping compounds. Fills nail
holes, cracks, and joints with putty, pressure washing, plaster, or other filler.
? Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and/or protect
interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other surfaces.
? Performs painting maintenance and repair work to woodwork, shelving, furniture, and
cabinetry; applies specialized wall and ceiling covering; may make limited repairs to
drywall and ceilings.
? Paints surfaces using different techniques and tools, e.g., feather, brush, roller, cloth,
airless spray equipment, and/or conventional spray equipment.
? Disposes of waste and hazardous materials in accordance with prescribed safety
policies and environmental procedures; maintains the cleanliness of painting facilities
and equipment; maintains inventory of materials; performs graffiti removal.
? Performs all work in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory
requirements.
? Moves or assists in the removal of furniture and other heavy equipment to facilitate
painting; assists other trades workers with special projects involving painting and various
maintenance work.
? Operates various automobiles and transport vehicles, e.g., car, utility truck, utility van.
? Completes necessary paperwork and reports as it relates to work projects.
? Performs related work as assigned.
DESCRIPTION OF LEVELS
Note: Examples of work and descriptions are meant to progress through the levels. For
example, an employee at level II may also perform work listed within the previous levels.
Factors that may distinguish between entry and journey levels include the degree of
independence required to perform the work, the complexity of the work, the scope of
responsibility, and the employee’s related work experience, education, and certifications.
Employees at the journey level may independently perform the full range of work listed in the
examples above or may routinely assist others in that work. They may also assist others in
performing work of greater complexity.


PAINTER I: Performs entry-level to moderately complex (journey-level) work in the maintenance
and repair of interior and exterior surfaces. Work involves assessing and preparing surfaces
before applying paint or finish, maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment, and utilizing
ladders, scissors lifts, or a bucket truck to access the workspace. Works under moderate
supervision, with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
? Assists in the coordination of the paint schedule.
? Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs.
? Performs related work as assigned.
Note: Any senior-level employee (level II) may serve in a lead role. Senior-level employees may
perform the full range of work identified in the levels preceding their own, may provide guidance
to other Painters, and may coordinate or oversee Painting projects. Factors that may distinguish
between senior levels include the scope of responsibility, oversight, and authority; the
complexity of the work; and the employee’s related work experience, education, and
certifications.


PAINTER II: Performs advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of interior
and exterior surfaces. Work involves assessing and preparing surfaces before applying paint or
finish, maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment, and utilizing ladders, scissors lifts, or a
bucket truck to access the workspace. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.
Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Employees at this level may:
? Coordinates the paint schedule
? Develops plans and specifications for maintenance and renovation projects.
? Estimates the time and materials used on projects.
? Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs and service to equipment.
? Can identify and dispose of waste and hazardous materials in accordance with
prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures.
? May plan and coordinate painting projects.
? May plan short and long-range painting maintenance programs.
? May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.
? Performs related work as assigned.


GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience in painting maintenance and finishing work on interior and/or exterior surfaces.
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by vocational or
special training in the painting trade, is generally preferred. Experience and education may be
substituted for one another.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
? Requires the ability to display knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and techniques of
the specialty area.
? Requires the ability to display knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hand and
power tools.
? Requires the ability to display knowledge of occupational hazards and safety
precautions.
? Requires the ability to use power and hand tools, and any equipment and machinery of
the specialty area.
? Requires the ability to plan and accomplish assigned jobs.
? Requires the ability to work from a general outline of duties and responsibilities.


REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE

? Two (2) years of commercial experience in skilled painting work is preferred.
? An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the
required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
? Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
