What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teen Camp Counselor - West Cabarrus position at Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA?
General Function:
The teen advisor position is a key role at the YMCA. Advisors are responsible for providing a safe and diverse experience to teens which is focused on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith. The teen advisor acts as a positive role model for program participants, communicating well with the teens, parents, YMCA staff, and Youth Development Director.
Know How:
Incumbent must pass YMCA background checks and successfully complete and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to acquire them within 30 days of employment. The teen advisor must know the needs and interest of teens ages 13-18, discipline policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing the program of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA. Additional trainings will be provided through the YMCA to include: YMCA Before & After-school Program Safety, Child Abuse Prevention, Behavior Management 101, Bullying Prevention at Camp, Day Camp Supervision, Appropriate Touch, Social Media & Digital Communication, Blood Borne Pathogen, and more.

Purpose & Objectives:
Each person is employed a as staff member because the administration feels he/she will conscientiously assist in the fulfillment of the YMCA’s mission in childcare by:
- Ability to care for and manage teens of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Plans and implements program activities, which are, culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Provides enjoyable experience for all youth, including growth and development opportunities.
- Adheres to program standards and all risk management policies and procedures including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Practices personal cleanliness and neatness.
- Provides leadership and guidance for all teens and fellow advisors, as needed/requested.
- Displays willingness to “pitch in” at all times in the interest of maintaining the building, grounds and equipment.
- Displays willingness, once consulted, to work in an activity other than his/her assignment in order to improve the experience for the participants.
- Attends staff meetings, trainings and special events as outlined upon hire date.
- Ability to communicate positively with members, participants, parents and other staff
- Ability to clean and organize within the daily operations of YMCA teen programming.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances, including strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
