What are the responsibilities and job description for the Afterschool Counselor - Corriher YMCA position at Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA?
General Function:
The Afterschool Counselor position is a key role at the YMCA. Counselors are responsible for providing a safe and diverse experience to youth which is focused on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith. The Afterschool Counselor acts as a positive role model for the campers, communicating well with the children, parents, YMCA staff, and Youth Development Director.
Know How:
Incumbent must pass YMCA background checks and successfully complete and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to acquire them within 30 days of employment. The Afterschool Counselor must know the needs and interest of school aged children, discipline policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing the program of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA. Additional trainings will be provided through the YMCA to include: Playground Safety, Child Abuse Prevention, Behavior Management 101, Appropriate Touch, Social Media & Digital Communication, Blood Borne Pathogen, and more.
Purpose & Objectives:
Each person is employed as a staff member because the administration feels he/she will conscientiously assist in the fulfillment of the YMCA’s mission in childcare by:
- Ability to care for and manage children of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Plans and implements program activities, which are, culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Provides enjoyable experience for all youth, including growth and development opportunities.
- Adheres to program standards and all risk management policies and procedures including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Practices personal cleanliness and neatness.
- Provides leadership and guidance for all campers and fellow counselors, as needed/requested.
- Displays willingness to “pitch in” at all times in the interest of maintaining the building, grounds and equipment.
- Displays willingness, once consulted, to work in an activity other than his/her assignment in order to improve the experience for the participants.
- Attends staff meetings, trainings and special events as outlined upon hire date.
- Ability to communicate positively with members, participants, parents and other staff.
- Ability to clean and organize within the daily operations of our afterschool program.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances, including strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
