The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent plays a key leadership role in the daily operation and maintenance of the golf course. Working closely with and reporting directly to the Golf Course Superintendent, this position assists in planning, supervising, and executing all agronomic and maintenance practices to ensure exceptional playing conditions. The Assistant Superintendent provides hands-on leadership to the course maintenance team, contributes professional expertise in turfgrass and irrigation management, and helps oversee all aspects of golf course presentation, safety, and efficiency. This role is designed for a motivated professional seeking to advance their career toward becoming a Golf Course Superintendent, while collaborating with other department leaders to support the overall member and guest experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
1. Planning, Scheduling, and Supervising
- Prepare daily work schedules in advance (completed the prior day).
- Maintain a daily log of work completed (submitted at the end of each day).
- Provide direct supervision and oversight of all golf course staff.
2. Agronomic Monitoring of Turfgrass
- Conduct daily inspections of greens, tees, and fairways.
- Report any turfgrass stress or unhealthy conditions to the Superintendent.
- Recommend and assist in implementing appropriate recovery methods using professional judgment.
3. Irrigation System Management
- Assist the Superintendent in developing and executing daily irrigation schedules.
- Evaluate turfgrass conditions daily as they relate to over- or under-watering.
- Adjust and fine-tune the irrigation system to correct undesirable conditions.
- Monitor pump stations, booster pumps, and wells for proper operation.
- Oversee irrigation controls and satellite systems to ensure efficiency.
Marginal Duties
- Maintain accurate course records and documentation.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
- A 2- or 4-year degree/certificate in agronomy, horticulture, or plant/soil sciences is required.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising seasonal or full-time staff.
- Must obtain California QAC within 1 year of hire.
- A strong desire to become a Golf Course Superintendent.
- Practical knowledge of golf course construction, establishment, and maintenance practices, including:
- Putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers
- Planting, cultivating, and pruning turfgrasses, ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees
- Fertilizer and soil conditioner applications
- Pest control methods and materials
- Drainage systems and irrigation practices, including automatic systems
- Equipment operation, servicing, and minor repair
- Thorough knowledge of facility-related maintenance, including restrooms, fences, bridges, cart paths, service roads, parking lots, ponds, and streams.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
Salary : $90,000 - $100,000
