What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Technologist position at Roto?
At Roto, the Mechanical Technologist performs an array of prototyping, fabrication, assembly, integration, programming, testing, documentation, and installation duties involved in the making of mechanical components and systems required to produce “hands on” interactive exhibits and interpretive displays.
Essential Functions (include, but are not limited to):

Research, develop and build mechanical solutions for both simple and complex exhibit assignments, integrating devices such as gears, pulleys, bearings, hinges, springs, motors, mechanical switches, pneumatic, hydraulic, and custom-made parts to achieve a desired result.

Prototype new exhibit devices and activities through mock-ups, prototypes, and product bench tests. Build scaled models of exhibit pieces and spaces for prototype evaluation using wood, plastics, foam core or similar modeling products.

Perform exhibit installations, repairs, and upgrades, involving coordination with clients and subcontractors as required.

Develop and maintain full documentation for all assigned exhibitions including parts list, technical/operating descriptions, schematics, software back-ups and troubleshooting procedures where necessary.

Keep abreast of technology and new developments related to the exhibit field.

Keep shop and personal workspace neat, clean, organized and well supplied.

Work with approved suppliers to order materials and maintain inventories of regularly used parts.

Must possess a minimum of 1-year direct experience or a college degree in a mechanical technology field.

Must have the mechanical ability to integrate various electro-mechanical devices and apparatus into exhibit casework.

Must have a good working knowledge and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical, plumbing, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems as well as willingness and ability to learn additional technical skills.

Must be able to read, interpret and create engineering, production, and shop drawings.

Experience with CAD, Sketch-up, SolidWorks and/or other drawing/drafting programs is a plus.

Must have a thorough knowledge and a high level of skill with hand tools, power tools, various saws, routers, and drills. Experience with CNC routers and mills is a plus.

Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Must be able to read architectural drawings consisting of floor plans, detail construction drawings and wiring diagrams.
