What are the responsibilities and job description for the Athletic Trainer position at Rothenberg Orthopedics, Regenerative and Sports Medicine?
**Shockwave Technician — Focused (Precision) & Radial Shockwave Therapy** Rothenberg Orthopedics, Regenerative and Sports Medicine — Boca Raton, FL [Full-time / Part-time]
**Position Summary**
We are seeking a skilled Shockwave Technician to deliver focused (precision) and radial shockwave therapy in our orthopedic practice. This role centers on one critical skill: the technician must know the body well enough to place every pulse exactly where it belongs. Shockwave therapy only works when the energy reaches the precise pathological tissue — a misplaced applicator is a wasted treatment. The right candidate combines strong musculoskeletal anatomy with careful, patient-centered technique, working under physician-directed protocols.
**Why anatomy knowledge is the core of this role**
The technician is responsible for locating the treatment target on every patient, every session. That requires:
- Working knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy: bones and bony landmarks, joints, muscle origins and insertions, tendons, ligaments, bursae, fascia, and peripheral nerve pathways.
- The ability to find targets by palpation and anatomical landmarks — e.g., the medial calcaneal tubercle in plantar fasciitis, the Achilles insertion, the lateral epicondyle, the patellar tendon, the greater trochanter, rotator cuff insertions.
- Understanding of common conditions treated with shockwave: plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer's elbow, rotator cuff tendinopathy, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, shin splints, and myofascial trigger points.
- Understanding of pain referral patterns, so treatment addresses the source — not just where the patient points.
- Adjusting applicator placement for body habitus, swelling, and anatomical variation between patients.
- Confirming the target with the patient through guided feedback during treatment.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Administer focused and radial shockwave treatments strictly per physician-written protocols.
- Identify and mark the treatment target using palpation and anatomical landmarks before every session.
- Position the patient for accurate applicator contact and comfort; explain the procedure and what to expect.
- Operate the STORZ shockwave system (focused and radial applicators) at protocol-directed settings — energy level, frequency, and pulse count.
- Screen each patient for contraindications before treatment; recognize adverse events and escalate to the clinical team immediately.
- Document every session: area treated, pulses delivered, energy settings, and patient tolerance/response.
- Maintain treatment rooms: turnover, infection control, and daily equipment checks and maintenance.
- Support scheduling flow so appointment times meet practice standards and the department runs efficiently.
- Contribute to department growth through excellent patient experience and rebooking support.
**Required Qualifications**
- Strong, demonstrable knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy as described above.
- Clinical background preferred: medical assistant, athletic trainer, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapy assistant, radiologic technologist, or equivalent hands-on patient-care experience.
- Current BLS/CPR certification.
- Completion of device-manufacturer training (STORZ) — will provide for the right candidate.
- Competency sign-off by the supervising physician before independent patient treatment.
- Clear communication skills and a calm, reassuring chairside manner.
- Reliable documentation habits and attention to detail.
- HIPAA and OSHA compliance.
**Preferred**
- Experience in an orthopedic or sports medicine setting.
- Florida Basic X-Ray Machine Operator credential (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience with shockwave, laser, or other musculoskeletal modalities.
**Scope**
This role delivers treatments under physician direction and established protocols. It does not include diagnosing conditions, prescribing treatment plans, or altering protocol settings independently.
