About the Role

At Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, every role contributes to our mission of ending cancer and improving lives. As a Tobacco Treatment Counselor, you will play a meaningful part in helping patients navigate one of the most important aspects of their cancer journey: quitting tobacco and building healthier habits that support treatment, recovery, and long-term wellness.

This role combines compassionate counseling, education, and ongoing support to help individuals facing cancer-related challenges. You'll work closely with patients and the care team to provide evidence-based tobacco treatment services through individual and group sessions delivered in person, by phone, and virtually.

If you are passionate about behavioral health, patient advocacy, and helping people make lasting changes during some of the most challenging moments of their lives, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.

What You'll Do

Provide tobacco cessation counseling to patients diagnosed with cancer using evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing

Educate patients about tobacco treatment options and medications that can support their quit journey

Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to understand each patient's needs and goals

Facilitate individual and group treatment sessions in person, by telephone, and virtually

Coordinate appointments and support the organization of treatment groups

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other members of the cancer care team to support patient success

Help patients address challenges that may impact their tobacco treatment goals, including:

Stress and anxiety

Mental health concerns

Other substance use disorders

Family and relationship challenges

Aging-related concerns

Emotional and physical effects of cancer and its treatment

Provide compassionate support and intervention when patients are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or emotional distress

Document care and maintain patient records in accordance with organizational standards

What You'll Bring

The most successful candidates will be compassionate listeners, skilled communicators, and strong advocates for patients.

You May Be a Great Fit If You

Have experience providing counseling, behavioral health, social work, or patient support services

Are comfortable building trusting relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Use a patient-centered approach and meet people where they are in their journey

Have experience with motivational interviewing, behavioral change counseling, or related therapeutic techniques

Can manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail

Work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team

Are passionate about improving health outcomes and helping people achieve meaningful change

Communicate effectively in person, virtually, and over the phone

Why You'll Love Working Here

At Roswell Park, you'll be part of an organization with a long history of innovation, compassion, and leadership in cancer care. As the nation's first cancer center, Roswell Park brings together experts across disciplines to advance cancer research, treatment, prevention, and survivorship. The starting pay for this position is $73,848.
