Lead Custodian, Weekend hours available, $18-$23/hour DOQ, approx 15-20 hours/week

SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Parks & Facilities Supervisor, the Lead Custodian is responsible for performing custodial and routine maintenance duties across Roselle Park District facilities. This position ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patrons, staff, and program participants. The Lead Custodian provides direct cleaning services, custodial tasks, supports special event setups, follows proper safety, sanitation, and facility procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- High School diploma or equivalent required; previous custodial or facility maintenance experience (minimum 3 years) preferred.
- Experience in custodial operations or related trade fields (minimum 3-5 years).
- Strong knowledge of building cleaning methods, custodial equipment, and proper chemical use.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, memos, schedules, and safety guidelines.
- Ability to lift, carry, and perform physical tasks required for custodial and maintenance duties.
- Excellent communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
- Valid driver’s license required for travel between district facilities.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (CPR must be completed within 30 days of start date).
- Ability to weekends, holidays as assigned and some week nights.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following tasks:
Custodial Operations
- Perform daily cleaning of restrooms, floors, lobbies, stairwells, offices, kitchens, multi-purpose rooms, and other facility areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, remove trash, clean windows, and restock supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness of rental furniture, high-traffic areas, and storage closets.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly preventive custodial tasks.
- Use proper cleaning methods, equipment, and chemicals while adhering to SDS safety procedures.
- Replace light bulbs, address minor maintenance issues, and report facility problems promptly.
Facility Maintenance & Support
- Perform minor repairs and assist maintenance staff when needed.
- Set up and tear down rooms for rentals, programs, meetings, and special events.
- Secure buildings at the end of shifts; ensure all doors, lights, and alarms are properly managed.
- Maintain accurate inventory of cleaning products, paper goods, and equipment; report supply needs to supervisor.
Customer Service & Communication
- Interact professionally with patrons, staff, and community members.
- Communicate facility issues, supply needs, and improvement recommendations to supervisor.
- Prepare periodic reports on facility conditions and custodial operations
Safety and Compliance Actively supports the Safety Policy and related programs including following/enforcing safety rules, reporting accidents and injuries, and developing ideas for the prevention of future incidents. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain working knowledge of all general and departmental safety rules.
- Follow and enforce district safety policies, reporting any accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions.
- Assist in safety investigations and take corrective action when unsafe conditions are observed.
- Adhere strictly to SDS guidelines for chemical handling and storage.
- Keep work areas clean, orderly, and free of hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Per American with Disabilities Act, general physical requirements include the following:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20–50 lbs as needed.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.
- Ability to respond quickly and accurately to situations or emergencies.
- Manual dexterity to operate cleaning equipment and perform physical tasks.
- Normal range of hearing and vision (corrected or uncorrected).
- Work may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, noise, and indoor/outdoor environmental conditions.
