Job Summary
Under the immediate direction of the Superintendent and/or designee, the primary role of a behavior specialist is to: assist in preventing inappropriate behavior; instructing and reinforcing appropriate behavioral expectations; provides directed learning experiences through the implementation of lesson plans and/or behavior plans; attends to the physical, emotional and therapeutic needs of students. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
1. Education: High School Diploma or GED; and Paraprofessional Exam Certification.
2. Minimum Experience: One year of experience working with students (autistic, emotionally disturbed,
intellectually disabled, etc.) in a classroom or similar learning environment, and use of positive
behavioral strategies.
3. Knowledge of: Disabilities leading to behavior or individual learning plan. Principles and practices
related to students with disabilities and/or behavior disorders students. Basic subjects taught in
schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Basic instructional methods
and techniques. Child growth and development. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling,
punctuation and vocabulary.
4. Personal Qualities: Grooming and personality which establishes a desirable example for pupils and
interpersonal skills needed to manage crisis situations.
5. Ability to: Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning
environment. Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of identified students with
disabilities as directed by the teacher. Assist in the implementation of lesson plans, behavior plans
and related data collection. Assist students with developing social, independent living,
communicative and learning skills. Understand and relate to students with special needs. Establish
and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
6. Communicated effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and
receptive attitude towards students with disabilities. Monitor, observe and report student behavior and
progress. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
7. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Observe health and safety
regulations. Maintain records.
8. Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Maintain regular and reliable
attendance.
9. Maintain CPR and first aid certification.
