What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Math and Science Teacher position at Roots Learning Community?
Middle School Mathematics & Science Teacher
Roots Academy | Cape Elizabeth, ME
Part-Time | 2026–2027 School Year
Roots Academy is a small, place-based microschool serving Kindergarten through Middle School students. We are an adventure-minded school that believes learning should extend beyond classroom walls.
We’re looking for someone who sees the ocean, the trail, and the community as extensions of the classroom—not field trips.
We are seeking a thoughtful, engaging educator to teach middle school mathematics and science in a highly collaborative, project-based environment.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting concepts across disciplines, designing meaningful learning experiences, and bringing learning into the world through fieldwork, outdoor exploration, and real-world application.
This is a part-time position, with the potential to grow into a full-time role for candidates interested in working across the K–8 program.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver integrated math and science instruction for middle school students
- Facilitate project-based learning experiences that connect academic content to real-world applications
- Use a conceptual, problem-solving approach to math instruction (e.g., Building Thinking Classrooms)
- Support students in developing critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance
- Differentiate instruction to meet a range of learners, including those who need support and those ready for extension
- Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary learning experiences
- Bring learning beyond the classroom, incorporating outdoor, place-based, and community-connected experiences
- Communicate with families and contribute to student progress documentation
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, or related field
- Experience teaching middle school math and/or science
- Familiarity with project-based learning and student-centered instructional approaches
- Experience with or interest in Building Thinking Classrooms or similar math pedagogy
- Enthusiasm for outdoor learning, fieldwork, and experiential education
- Ability to differentiate for a wide range of learners
- Strong collaboration skills and comfort working in a small, flexible school environment
- Organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing planning and student documentation
