Room at the Inn is a nonprofit family shelter providing safe, dignified emergency housing and supportive services to families experiencing homelessness. We partner closely with churches, volunteers, community agencies, and donors to offer compassionate hospitality, stability, and pathways toward independence. The Executive Director plays a key lead

Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of Room at the Inn and is responsible for strategic leadership, operational excellence, financial stewardship, community engagement, and the overall health and effectiveness of the organization. This role champions the mission, leads and supports staff, ensures high‑quality services for families, and fosters strong relationships with partners, donors, volunteers, and the board.

This position directly manages six staff: Manager of Finance/Administration; Client Coordinator; Program Coordinator; Volunteer Coordinator; Development Coordinator; and Administrative Coordinator.

Strategic Leadership & Mission Advancement

  • Lead the implementation of the organization’s mission, long-term vision, and strategic plan.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors in setting goals, evaluating progress, and ensuring Room at the Inn remains responsive to community needs.
  • Identify community trends, service gaps, and opportunities for innovation in family homelessness services.

Operational & Program Management

  • Oversee all day-to-day operations of the shelter, including programming, case management, transportation, volunteer coordination, and finance.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, licensing standards, and safety requirements.
  • Evaluate program performance and outcomes; implement improvements that strengthen impact and guest experience.
  • Work closely with both government and private funding agencies for grant reporting, compliance, and coordination.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support staff; promote a collaborative, trauma-informed, and service-oriented culture.

Financial Stewardship & Resource Management

  • Develop and oversee the annual budget in alignment with board expectations and organizational goals.
  • Ensure strong financial management practices, including reporting, forecasting, and accountability.
  • Oversee management of payroll, grants, contracts, and vendor relationships in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Work closely with external accounting firm for financial statement preparation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Schedule and engage an annual audit of the organization in accordance with agency and funding requirements.
  • Work with the board’s finance committee to monitor organizational financial health.

Fundraising, Development & Communications

  • Lead fundraising strategy, including donor cultivation, stewardship, grant development, and special events.
  • Strengthen relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and faith based partners.
  • Oversee marketing and communications efforts, ensuring consistent messaging aligned with mission and values.
  • Serve as a public ambassador for Room at the Inn, representing the organization at community events, meetings, and media engagements.

Board Relations

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors and Board committees.
  • Pull together board materials for regular board meetings; partner with the Board Chair to set agenda items and prioritize topics for board discussion.
  • Provide timely and accurate information to support board governance and decision making.
  • Assist with board recruitment, orientation, and development.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Foster strong partnerships with service providers, government agencies, schools, and community stakeholders, and congregational partners including St. Louis County Continuum of Care.
  • Advocate for families experiencing homelessness and represent the organization in local coalitions and networks.
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson at community and faith-based events, including engagements that may occur in the evenings, nights, and on weekends.
  • Deliver presentations and mission updates to congregations (including during worship services) and to community organizations, as requested.
  • Build awareness and strengthen public understanding of the issues surrounding family housing instability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in nonprofit management, social work, business administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit, social services, housing, or related sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff leadership, program management, and organizational administration.
  • Proven success in fundraising, donor relations, and grant writing.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and public-speaking skills.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed care, diversity, equity, and respectful service delivery.

The salary range for this position is $95,000-$105,000 depending on candidate credentials and experience. Room at the Inn offers a competitive benefits package and a 403b plan.
