Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
The InReach Housing and Resource Navigator, Unsheltered (aka InReach Navigator) position provides housing navigation and resource connection services to individuals who visit Roof Above’s Day Services Center and who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness. The ultimate goal of the position is to help these individuals identify and secure a permanent housing solution. The overarching responsibilities include developing housing plans, completing appropriate assessments, connecting to and educating on appropriate resources, and broadly engaging with individuals at the Day Services Center. The position is part of a team that is under InReach within the Day Services Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Help unsheltered individuals identify and secure housing.
- Help unsheltered individuals connect to appropriate resources.
- Provide housing and resource navigation through individual and group meetings as well as through walk-up availability at the Day Services Center.
- Help develop and implement processes for accessing InReach Services.
- Maintain a caseload as directed/assigned.
- Complete preliminary assessments, complete applications, and secure documentation around identification, social security, homeless verification, and income/benefit verification.
- Help clients secure transportation needs for appropriate appointments, including through public/private transportation or transporting a client in an agency vehicle.
- Enter and maintain client data and case notes into appropriate databases in accordance with program policies and required time limits.
- Help develop and implement InReach-led program activities including housing readiness workshops, ID clinics, Social Security Card clinics and the like.
- Participate in community work groups focused on ending homelessness, as directed.
- Assist with any Day Services Center service needs, including, but not limited to managing service sign-ups, de-escalating disruptive behavior, greeting and welcoming individuals at the Day Services Center, and other needs related to the functions of the Day Services Center.
- Serve as a resource and build relationships with Day Services Center volunteers.
- Participate in any staff training and growth opportunities, as directed.
- Be part of a team to perform other duties as assigned and as other teams may need assistance.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- High School Diploma is required.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of relatable experience, or a combination of relevant experience and education is preferred.
- Approach work with a sense of urgency and timeliness.
- Be diligent, thorough, inquisitive, and solution oriented.
- Proficiency working within a Homeless Management Information Services Database (training provided).
- Proficiency using technology.
- Prior experience working with homeless populations and experience working in a homeless shelter are preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Individual must be able to work with limited supervision, embrace a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable de-escalating negative behaviors with diverse individuals including persons with mental illness and substance use issues. Individual must be team oriented and be willing to step up to help other teams. Individual must embrace engagement outside of an office and within other areas of the Day Services Center campus.
