What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bicycle Ambassador (Public Safety Support – Unarmed) position at Rome Police Department?
The Rome Police Department Bicycle Ambassador Program is designed to support public safety while building strong community connections. Bicycle Ambassadors are trained, unarmed employees who carry out important non-emergency duties, allowing officers to focus on critical law enforcement tasks.

Responsibilities
- Respond to non-emergency service calls
- Direct traffic during special events or minor accidents
- Provide directions, safety information, and assistance to residents & visitors
- Assist with community problem-solving and neighborhood concerns
- Support police operations with documents, equipment, and administrative tasks
- Provide basic first aid and CPR assistance when needed
What Ambassadors Do Not Do
- Carry firearms
- Make arrests
- Detain suspects
- Use force (except in self-defense)
Qualifications
- 18 years or older
- Valid driver’s license (required)
- Comfortable riding and maintaining a bicycle for extended periods
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to complete department-provided training (CPR, traffic direction, etc.)
- Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations, state and federal laws, G.C.I.C./N.C.I.C. rules and regulations, the City of Rome ordinances, and public information and privacy acts.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle operation to include electric bicycle.
- Ability to meet physical, mental or other standards by regulation, to include running short distances rapidly, to see hear acutely under both day and night conditions.
- Ability to work on various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED and at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- Must have valid Georgia driver’s license and a satisfactory 5-year driving history to include no DUIs in the last 3 years.
- Must be able to successfully complete the hiring steps to include interview, written exercise, background check, credit check, criminal history check, physical exam, drug screen, and complete a polygraph exam.
- Must be able to pass and maintain the appropriate GCIC certifications.
- Must submit to a random drug screen if requested.
- Must obtain or be able to obtain the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment.
