Williamsburg House of Mercy is seeking an Associate Executive Director.

 

The Associate Executive Director is a senior-level leadership position within the Williamsburg House of Mercy (WHOM) that plays a critical, hands-on role in overseeing and ensuring the successful execution of programs, operations, and strategic initiatives. This position involves direct supervision, operational leadership, and high-level strategic support to the Executive Director. 

The Associate Executive Director will ensure program and operational alignment with WHOM's mission and strategic goals while cultivating strong relationships with stakeholders.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Associate Executive Director (AED) serves as a primary deputy, responsible for day-to-day management, administrative oversight, and stepping in as a leader when the Executive Director is unavailable.

Our operational model is rooted in Catholic Social Teachings and Radical Hospitality, leading with trust and offering essential services under one roof. We strategically focus on four integrated missions—Food Security, Crisis Intervention, Day Shelter, and Family Support—to provide a unified pathway out of instability and manage the increasing complexity of client needs.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

1. Leadership, Strategy, and Administration

  • Serve as a primary deputy to the Executive Director, providing high-level support in administrative and strategic planning efforts.
  • Oversee and manage the execution of the organizational strategic plan, translating high-level goals into actionable program and operational strategies.
  • Represent WHOM in high-level community engagements, donor cultivation events, and speaking opportunities.
  • Provide backup organizational leadership across all departments
  • Lead the development and execution of staff onboarding, training, and professional development programs to ensure all employees and key volunteers are aligned with WHOM's mission and best practices.
  • Serve as a resource for conflict resolution and performance management for staff across programs and operations, working closely with the Executive Director on organizational structure and talent strategy.

2. Program Oversight and Mission Integration

  • Oversee the integration and coordination of the Four Core Missions (Food Security, Crisis Intervention, Day Shelter, and Family Support), ensuring clients are seamlessly connected to necessary wrap-around services to facilitate a path toward self-sufficiency.
  • Foster a culture of Radical Hospitality and Dignity across all services, ensuring program delivery meets the organization's core values.
  • Provide supervision of Food Insecurity Programs (staff and volunteers) to ensure the seamless, efficient, and compliant execution of all WHOM's Food Insecurity Programs (weekly USDA distributions, mobile pantry, food locker, homebound deliveries, and special distributions).
  • Providing direct supervision of all programs; oversee all additional micro-programs and seasonal distributions ensuring their successful execution and integration into the core mission.
  • Direct the Programs Manager in the standardization, maintenance, and management of all program data tracking, reporting systems, and success measures. The AED is responsible for ensuring data quality and the Programs Manager is accountable for the day-to-day execution of these tasks under supervision.
  • Manage the Volunteer Coordinator and all efforts related to volunteer engagement ensuring needs are met, retention is prioritized, and all volunteer activities adhere to organizational policies, safety protocols, and compliance standards.
  • Provide strategic oversight to the School Fund and Outreach Financial Assistance Mission (Crisis Assistance and Eviction Prevention), ensuring resources are utilized effectively to stabilize families and prevent housing instability. This oversight includes serving as the primary liaison with the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula regarding financial assistance programming, which requires the mandatory attendance at all scheduled partnership and reporting meetings.
  • Oversee the operations of the HOPE Pregnancy Center and the Harbor Day Shelter, ensuring the effective distribution of critical services and delivery of educational and referral services.

3. Operations, Compliance, and Partnerships

  • Act as the primary organizational liaison with the local Foodbank, collaborating on required reporting, compliance documentation, and general partnership communications.
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with external partner organizations that provide on-site services, such as medical screenings, vaccine clinics, job fairs, and workforce training providers, ensuring their effective delivery and integration.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators for all programs, evaluating overall effectiveness and making data-driven recommendations for structural and programmatic improvements. The accurate measurement and reporting of these metrics are essential for demonstrating mission impact, securing renewal funding, and ensuring compliance with all existing and prospective grant requirements.
