About Roll & Hill

Roll & Hill was founded in 2010 to build an American design aesthetic rooted in craft and collaboration. We partner with independent designers worldwide and provide manufacturing capabilities typically reserved for much larger makers. Every piece is made by hand at our facility in Byron Center, Michigan. One at a time. On demand.

This approach allows us to customize lighting and furniture to each client’s needs. No mass production. No shortcuts. We have grown by honoring precision, flexibility, and follow-through.

We are expanding with intent. Across trade, contract, wholesale, and direct-to-consumer channels. Across marketing, supply chain, and manufacturing operations. Across lighting, furniture, and new categories.

That growth depends on people who care deeply about execution. People who understand that our reputation lives in the details.

The Role

The Design Engineer supports production through disciplined mechanical engineering. You work at the intersection of engineering and manufacturing. Daily. You solve problems that affect real products as they move through the shop.

This role focuses on NPD (new product development), improving products already in production, and providing rapid support for custom orders. You collaborate closely with engineering, production, sourcing, designers, and sales in a true on-demand manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities
  • Support NPD (new product development) from an engineering perspective.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, sourcing, and sales to execute new, custom, and production work.
  • Create and maintain BOMs for custom product orders. Fast turnaround required.
  • Design new or modified parts for NPD and custom orders, including complete production documentation.
  • Update 3D models and 2D drawings for all ECO and BOM changes.
  • Develop internal and external prototypes for validation and production readiness.
  • Create and refine detailed assembly instructions for legacy and new fixtures.
  • Support jig and tool design for production efficiency and consistency.
  • Assist in the development of new and custom packaging solutions.
  • Conduct first article inspections and support quality control efforts. High standards required.
  • Develop, execute, and document product testing for launches or continuous improvement.
  • Identify process gaps. Propose improvements. Implement approved changes.
  • Submit all ECO and BOM updates to the Engineering Manager for approval.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Solid working knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with attention to detail.
  • Clear critical thinking. Ability to anticipate issues and propose multiple solutions.
  • Effective communication skills. Small team. High collaboration.
  • Professional judgment and accountability.
