This opportunity may be filled at the Engineer, Senior/Lead Engineer, or Lead Engineer level depending on experience and technical expertise. The role provides engineering support and leadership across transmission line projects from planning and design through construction and commissioning.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and support new transmission lines, rebuilds, upgrades, and system improvement projects.
  • Perform transmission line modeling and analysis using PLS-CADD or comparable design software.
  • Develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, material requirements, and design packages.
  • Evaluate transmission structures, conductors, shield wires, insulators, hardware, foundations, clearances, loading, and related components.
  • Develop and improve engineering standards, equipment specifications, and design practices.
  • Review manufacturer drawings and technical submittals and coordinate with suppliers, consultants, contractors, and project teams.
  • Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and field implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve transmission system reliability, constructability, maintainability, performance, and lifecycle cost.
  • Apply applicable utility standards, engineering codes, and regulatory requirements, including relevant NERC, FERC, IEEE, NEC, and NFPA requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, construction, planning, project management, procurement, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and other team members based on experience level.

Position Levels

Engineer

Works independently on transmission engineering assignments of moderate complexity and contributes to larger capital projects.

Typical qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Approximately 4 years of transmission, power delivery, utility, or related engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of transmission line design principles and components.
  • Experience with PLS-CADD or similar transmission design software.
  • Ability to develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.

Senior Engineer

Leads significant engineering assignments and serves as a technical resource for complex transmission projects.

Typical qualifications include:

  • Approximately 6–9 years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of transmission line design, equipment, materials, and construction practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering activities for medium- to large-scale capital projects.
  • Strong proficiency with PLS-CADD or comparable transmission modeling tools.
  • Experience developing or improving engineering standards and technical specifications.
  • Ability to mentor engineers, coordinate multidisciplinary work, and resolve complex engineering issues.

Lead Engineer

Serves as a senior technical authority for complex transmission engineering initiatives and system-wide engineering practices.

Typical qualifications include:

  • Approximately 10 years of progressively responsible transmission or power delivery engineering experience.
  • Expert-level knowledge of transmission line design, materials, equipment, standards, and industry practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership of technically complex or strategically significant transmission projects.
  • Advanced expertise with PLS-CADD or similar engineering tools.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, specifications, technical requirements, and design practices.
  • Ability to advise engineering leadership and project teams on complex technical, reliability, risk, and regulatory matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor senior engineers and develop technical capability across an engineering organization.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience designing or supporting high-voltage transmission lines and associated infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of transmission structures, conductors, hardware, clearances, loading criteria, and related components.
  • Ability to read and develop plan/profile drawings, engineering drawings, one-line diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and engineering problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supporting projects through design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of electric utility engineering practices and applicable industry standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary project teams and with external consultants, contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers.
  • Ability to perform periodic field work in utility and construction environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Electric utility or transmission owner/operator experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or related engineering design applications.
  • Experience developing transmission engineering standards, material specifications, or equipment requirements.

Work Environment

The position combines engineering office work with periodic field and project-site activities. Travel to transmission facilities, construction sites, supplier facilities, or other project locations may be required. A hybrid work arrangement may be available depending on business and project needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Approximately 4 years of transmission, power delivery, utility, or related engineering experience. Additional experience will qualify for higher level roles.
  • Working knowledge of transmission line design principles and components.
  • Experience with PLS-CADD or similar transmission design software.
  • Ability to develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
