POSITION SUMMARY: The Cultural Coordinator position is instrumental in furthering the revitalization and cross-departmental integration of traditional knowledge, skills and cultural practices of the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria, and celebrating indigenous culture. The Cultural Coordinator, a position within the Tribal Historic Preservation/Cultural Department, is responsible for creating and implementing comprehensive cultural programming for youth, adults, and elders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Facilitate Cultural Committee meetings.
- Network and collaborate with traditional skills practitioners and instructors.
- Create, organize, schedule and host cultural classes, events, and workshops on site and at local schools and other venues.
- Collaborate with other THPO staff to host events and meetings, including those in traditional ecological knowledge, gardening, and medicine.
- Collaborate with other Department Directors to offer culturally relevant and appropriate programming and events.
- Plan, post, and maintain six months to 18 months of programming to the Cultural Event Calendar.
- Document and analyze interest and attendance to cultural classes, camps, and workshops and alter offerings accordingly.
- Seek and map locations to gather traditional materials and process traditional materials.
- Create cultural educational materials in print and digital format.
- Accompany and/or supervise Tribal Members on field trips by vehicle or on foot.
- Collect materials, and prepare purchase orders and requisitions for travel, materials, and supplies needed for cultural classes.
- Prepare materials and items for cultural events.
- Attend required trainings and/or meetings relevant to cultural preservation.
- Assist in writing grant proposals and carrying out grant related activities.
- Other duties may be assigned.
AUTHORITY/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise attendees (including youth) of cultural classes, camps, events, workshops and field trips.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
- Must have High School diploma or GED required; and
- Must have 3 /years of related experience with facilitating, training, or participating in Indigenous Cultural traditions, activities and skills.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Shall possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by agencies insurance.
- Must provide or obtain the Servsafe Food Handlers certification upon hire and maintain during employment.
- Must provide or obtain CPR & First Aide certification within three (3) months of hire.
COMPUTER OPERATIONS
- Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).
- Must be able to work with American Indian people and be sensitive to their culture.
- Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
- Participate in proactive team efforts of Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria.
- Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
- Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, holidays & special events as needed.
