Responsible for organizing and carrying out structured learning processes for students in dental assisting and related courses. Cooperate with other faculty in planning and developing curricula within the spectrum of Dental and Allied Health Occupations programs.  Participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including student advising, ongoing professional development, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, and community involvement.

Supervision Received

The dean is, in consultation with the Director of Dental Programs, responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president and confers with the Director in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels. 
  1. Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate; teaching a variety of didactic, laboratory & clinical dental assisting and/or related courses.
  2. Advises students on matters of program goals and course requirements, scheduling office hours as required.
  3. Monitor patient care to ensure that patients receive safe and appropriate care.
  4. Assist with orientation, calibration and training of part-time clinical instructors.
  5. Assess the completeness and accuracy of student, patient and clinic records.
  6. Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, patients, faculty and staff.
  7. Monitor student, patient and instructor compliance with clinical policies and procedures.
  8. Serve as a role model for the dental assisting profession.
  9. Prepares, distributes and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
  10. Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments which are related to the stated objectives of the course and program.
  11. Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
  12. Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed; participates in comprehensive program reviews, to include regular and systemic curriculum and program assessment to be used for continuous program and curricular improvement; participates in assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institutional levels. 
  13. Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
  14. Participates in the development of the quarterly class schedule and the annual departmental budget; initiates purchase requisitions, travel requests, and work orders as needed.
  15. Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional manner.
  16. Represents the program and the college to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
  17. Responsible for departmental equipment: participates in periodic inventory and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education


  1. Bachelor's degree earned within three years of the date of initial hire (military with a rank of staff sergeant, E5, or non-commissioned officer are exempt); 
  2. Current CPR/First AID card, HIPAA and OSHA standards training required (or ability to obtain); and
  3. Background in and current knowledge of dental assisting and educational theory and methodology.


Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted:  accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609.   Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.


Licenses and Certificates:


Required Qualifications: 

  1. Holds a current certification for Dental Assisting; 
  2. Oregon Credentials for expanded dental assisting functions (EFDA), including dental radiography, coronal polishing, placement of pit and fissure sealants (preferred);
  3. Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) credential: Certified Dental Assistant (CDA); and
  4. Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.


Preferred Qualification: RDH certification.


For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).


Experience:


  1. Current teaching experience in dental assisting education is preferred.
  2. Recent experience in the application of four-handed dentistry principles
  3. Experience working with patients who have limited access to dental care.
  4. Experience with computer-based dental practice management systems.
  5. Experience with Microsoft Office computer software including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.


Knowledge of:


  1. Computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, networks, the internet, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations;
  2. Curriculum development;
  3. Educational theory and teaching methods (e.g., background in current education theory and practice, concepts relative to the specific subjects they are teaching and clinical practice experiences, and a variety of pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion, and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles)
  4. Knowledge of current concepts in dental assisting and dental assisting education.
  5. Current knowledge of dental infection control procedures, radiation safety, emergency management, HIPAA and FERPA.
  6. The contemporary community college’s mission, its role in higher education, and its diverse student population; 
  7. The role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act;

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for less than half of the daily work period (about 40%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds daily, 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

Primary work setting is a dental assisting education program located on the health professions center.  Some work may be scheduled at off-campus fieldwork sites.


While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a classroom environment. The employee may be exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and/or hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate. Some work may be scheduled at off-campus fieldwork sites.

As a condition of employment:  the successful candidate for the Full-time Faculty Dental Assisting position will be required to provide documentation of the following prior to the start of employment:

This is a Full-Time Faculty position (100%, 10 months/year) in the Dental Assisting DepartmentStarting compensation will be in accordance with initial step placement per the current Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and the 2024-25 Full-Time Faculty salary schedule. Consideration will be given to experience and educational achievement.
