ESL Instructor (Adjunct Faculty Pool)

This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Adult Basic Skills department. The pool will remain open until June 2026 unless positions are no longer needed. Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted and interviewed as positions become available. 

Instructor provides ESL instruction integrated with life and work skills to students of varying ages.  

Supervision Received
The dean, in consultation with the department chair is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
1. Instructs ESL classes. 
2. Maintains atmosphere that is encouraging and supportive. 
3. Participates as a team member to support student success. 
4. Attends local/state/regional trainings and/or meetings as recommended by the director, coordinator or lead instructor. 
5. Familiarizes self with center materials and equipment and is able to recommend appropriate course materials for individual students. 
6. Assists students with learning difficulties and a variety of different learning needs. 
7. Communicates well with a diverse student population. 
8. Assists in student paper work and maintaining accurate records both in student folders and student record sheet notebooks. 
9. Gathers data for TOPS reporting system. 
10. Uses TOPS reports and analysis to inform instruction. 
11. Maintains professional manner and appropriate role modeling. 
12. Attends staff meetings as recommended by director, coordinator, or lead instructor and attends to department and college-wide correspondence through e-mail.  
Education: Bachelor's degree in education or related field is required; Master's degree in education or related field preferred. TESOL certificate preferred. 
 
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Experience: Minimum of three years' experience teaching ESL  

Knowledge of: Adult learning theory; instructional strategies for various audiences; ABE/ESL curriculum; learning styles and disabilities; computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations, spreadsheets and database management; curriculum development; the community colleges' mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs.  

Ability to: Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Work with non-traditional adult learners as well as teens. 

All ABS employees are required to have a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Verification submitted to the Oregon Department of Education. This information is then sent to the State Police and FBI for verification.  

Licenses: If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.
 
Physical Demands: Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%) which is spent in a classroom operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and other standard office equipment or in a lab environment using standard science equipment and tools. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds daily, 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds occasionally. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/classroom environment, with occasional outside lab and/or field trips, and is exposed to chemicals, fumes, and dirt; potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Where appropriate, personal protective equipment will be issued and the employee will be trained in its proper application and use. Lighting is adequate.
