POSITION: Special Education/Resource Teacher

LOCATION: Rogers High School

REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Special Education

SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027



JOB DESCRIPTION:   To devise and implement programs for students who have identified disabilities and 

require specialized instruction, and/or students assigned to their caseload to help them reach grade level benchmarks. To create flexible middle grade programs and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students; to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education, in accordance with each student’s ability; and to establish good relationships with parents, other staff members and administration.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

  • Must hold a valid RI Certificate in Middle/Secondary Special Education Teacher, grades 7-12.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of identified students with special needs.
  • Ability to know and utilize technology and communication devices in the teaching and learning process.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, teaching experience, and the interview process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in implementing Common Core State Standards
  • Spanish Bilingual preferred
  • Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet children’s specific learning profiles, and social needs of students;
  • Develops specific individualized goals and objectives to address students at their emotional level;
  • Monitor progress with each child in order to differentiate and support academic and social learning;
  • Monitor progress with each child at their level to develop standards-based goals and objectives which address the academic and social needs of the student;
  • Develops standards-based Individual Education Programs, progress reports, pre-tests and post-tests of student’s academic, social;
  • and communication skills;
  • Uses a wide range of teaching materials, technology and various approaches to learning;
  • Engages parents and students in developing transition goals aligned with interests;
  • Establishes, supports, teaches positive school behavior;
  • Works as a team member to help students progress;
  • Collaborates with other educators and therapists to provide a continuum of service options;
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and achievement and use results for instructional activities;
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day;
  • Uses data collection and assessment to track and document student’s growth; 
  • Provides case management and coordination of services;
  • Helps parents to understand the specific needs of their children;
  • Honors I.D.E.A. and all other applicable regulations
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of education by reading journals and publications, and attending professional meetings, seminars, and workshops;
  • Be willing to participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or designee at Rogers High School.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract.  Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators.
