Reporting to the Assistant Director for Residence Life, the Area Coordinator, Residence Life & Housing serves an important leadership role in creating an environment, and experience, that provides stability and a sense of community for the students residing in Housing at Roger Williams University.
The Area Coordinator oversees 2 residential buildings including the supervision of a Graduate Community Director.
Residential Education
- Facilitate, monitor, update, report and evaluate engagement strategies based on the RWU Student Life Division Curricular Model and Residence Life and Housing Educational Plan.
- Regularly evaluate the residential curriculum model to continue to encourage personal development, academic achievement, community living, and social interaction.
- Oversee student leadership opportunities within the residential community including the Hall Ambassador program.
- Attend staff / student-planned community development activities and educational events.
- Ensure supervisees are implementing Curriculum in their areas effectively.
- Serve as a primary hearing officer for the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution adjudicating low and mid-level cases involving alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct
Facilities & Operations
- Manage the administrative aspects of two residential buildings. These duties include administering room inventory reports, executing health and safety inspections, key inventories, room changes, and other details as related to the opening and closing of the residential community.
- Promptly follow up on concerns in residential areas to ensure concerns are being resolved in a timely and professional manner.
- Assume the overall responsibility of a residential community, monitoring and reporting concerns related to the safety and facilities in the area.
- Ensure daily maintenance and custodial issues are managed effectively and efficiently.
- Oversee the opening and closing of assigned residential area as well as the transition to summer student and conference housing.
- Prepare an end of the year report to document success, challenges, and inner working of the residential community.
Student Support
- Meet individually with students and, when appropriate, with parents to assist them in making appropriate choices and utilizing appropriate resources to help foster success at RWU.
- Serve as on-call professional staff on a rotating basis during weekend and evening hours to respond to residential emergencies dealing with student behavior, mental health emergencies, and other situations that require an immediate response.
- Follow up with on call concerns and Students of Concern cases as directed.
- Create and support student recognition initiatives, lead recruitment and hiring initiatives, and promote leadership opportunities.
- Maintain a professional relationship with students, staff and colleagues.
- Offer assistance and support to students through regular contact and conducting wellness checks upon request.
Staff Management
- Supervise, assist in training, and mentor one Graduate Community Director.
- Formally evaluate assigned staff on a semesterly or yearly basis as appropriate.
- Maintain one on one meetings with Graduate Community Director on a weekly to bi-weekly basis to ensure adequate supervision and follow up on any issues.
- Maintain one on one meetings with directly supervised Resident Assistants on a bi-weekly basis to ensure adequate supervision and follow up.
- Supervise, mentor, evaluate, and make recommendations for a staff of at least two Head Resident Assistants (HRA) and up to 25 Resident Assistants (RAs).
- Assist in the development and facilitation of staff training and onboarding.
- Participate in the development and facilitation of Resident Assistant selection, hiring, and placement.
- Develop, implement, and assess semi-annual training programs and weekly staff meetings for the purpose of staff education and on-going professional development of the residence life paraprofessional team.
- Model and promote inclusiveness through staff training, and support of division and campus wide Social Justice Initiatives.
Department Support
- Actively participate in departmental, divisional, and campus wide committees, including a specific auxiliary assignment or special project as designated by the Director of Residence Life and Housing.
- Attend and participate in departmental Leadership meetings as requested.
- Be regularly accessible, visible, and present for large campus wide programs, speakers, and athletic events.
- Volunteer for at least one Student Programs, Leadership, and Orientation event each semester.
- Participate in new student recruitment and orientation events.
- Facilitate presentations and discussions for incoming students during June and August New Student Orientations.
- Ensure leadership team is aware of significant issues within assigned residential areas.
Additional Functions
- Support the various programs and initiatives of the department, as well as accepting responsibility for additional initiatives, such as committee participation, or projects, as assigned by supervisor.
- Represent the department on campus-wide initiatives, or participate in divisional events, occasionally on a volunteer basis.
This is an 11-month full-time position.
Job Requirements :
- Bachelor's Degree
- Three years experience in residence life and housing.
- Supervisory skills which inspire, motivate, and foster a culture in which all staff members are treated with respect, fairness, and professionalism and promotes professional development among the team.
- Detail-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as leader and collaborative member of a team.
- Sensitive, diplomatic, and articulate written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to implement problem solving strategies to manage everyday residential challenges such as crisis response, conflict management, community development, and student / family concerns in a fast-paced environment.
- A demonstrated commitment and passion for professional growth in the areas of student learning and development, community development, supporting students' well-being, and best practices in residence life programs and operations.
- Commitment to expanding knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, historical inequalities, and strategies for interacting effectively with a variety of cultures and people.
- Commitment to professional growth and best practices in using technology in residence life and student affairs to increase efficiency, accessibility, and quality of housing operations and residence life practices.

- This is a live-on position so the incumbent must live in University housing.
- Availability on weekends and evenings as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master's degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration, or other relevant field.
- Experience using diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services practice (, staffing practices, supervision, training, policies, programs).
- Experience in housing systems that include crisis management, student advising, program planning, and supervision of student staff.
- Experience working with a learning outcome based residential curriculum.
- Demonstrated skills in public speaking, facilitating conversations, and presenting to families, students, staff and other constituents.
- Experience with student conduct, mediating student conflicts and restorative approaches to conflict resolution.
- Experience planning and successfully executing programs, events, and trainings.
