About Rocky Mountain Truck Centers

Rocky Mountain Truck Centers (RMTC) provides 24/7 roadside assistance, heavy‑duty towing and recovery, and truck repair services for commercial fleets and owner‑operators. Our roadside technicians and wrecker operators work in high‑risk, high‑urgency environments where safety, documentation, and customer care are non‑negotiable.

Position Summary

The Dual Wrecker Operator / Roadside Diesel Technician role combines:

  • Commission‑based towing and recovery work operating light‑, medium‑, and/or heavy‑duty wreckers; and

  • Hourly roadside diesel technician work, performing mobile diagnostics and repairs on Class 5–8 trucks and trailers, with limited in‑shop work as needed.

You will respond to breakdowns, perform on‑site diagnostics and repairs, tow or recover disabled vehicles when required, and complete all work in accordance with DOT/FMCSA, OEM, and RMTC standards. Success in this role requires strong mechanical ability, safe wrecker operation, accurate documentation, and disciplined use of company systems.

Key Responsibilities

Roadside Diesel Technician (RS) – Mobile Repair

  • Respond to roadside service calls for disabled commercial trucks and trailers.

  • Perform on‑site diagnostics and repairs on mechanical, electrical, air brake, HVAC, aftertreatment, and hydraulic systems.

  • Operate a fully equipped service truck; drive to breakdown locations on highways, interstates, truck stops, yards, and remote areas.

  • Perform emergency tire changes, air system repairs, lighting repairs, and other roadside services.

  • Use OEM diagnostic tools and software for fault codes, schematics, and guided repair procedures.

  • Document labor, parts, findings, and repair stories accurately in company systems (e.g., TechWrench and/or Protractor).

  • Capture required photos and complete inspection lines per company standards.

Wrecker Operator – Towing & Recovery

  • Safely operate light‑, medium‑, and/or heavy‑duty wreckers to tow, recover, or transport disabled commercial vehicles.

  • Perform winch‑outs, load shifts, accident recovery, and complex towing scenarios in coordination with dispatch and law enforcement as needed.

  • Set up safe work areas (cones, lighting, hazard zones) and manage accident or roadside scenes.

  • Follow company standards for rigging, driveline and axle removal, securement, height/weight limits, and wheel torque.

  • Complete pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections on wreckers and equipment and report any issues.

  • Use mobile apps for timekeeping, job status updates, photos, signatures, and invoicing support.

  • Collect payment at the scene on required jobs; do not release units or keys before payment when policy requires.

Documentation, Communication & Customer Service

  • Maintain real‑time communication with dispatch, event coordinators, service advisors, and branch leadership.

  • Provide accurate ETAs, status updates, and completion notifications for all calls.

  • Obtain required customer and driver signatures, IDs, and authorizations per company policy.

  • Maintain professional, calm communication with customers under high‑stress conditions.

  • Ensure that all jobs are fully documented with clear notes, photos, and completed tasks before closing.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all RMTC safety policies, PPE requirements, and roadside safety protocols.

  • Comply with DOT/FMCSA Hours‑of‑Service and logbook/telematics rules as applicable.

  • Complete and document pre‑trip, post‑trip, and periodic equipment inspections.

  • Work in alignment with roadside safety, fuel, and pre‑trip compliance protocols.

  • Immediately report any accidents, safety incidents, damage, or near‑miss events.

Work Schedule & On‑Call

  • Work a regular assigned schedule plus participation in a rotating on‑call schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Respond to dispatch during on‑call periods within company‑defined timeframes (acknowledgment and en‑route expectations).

  • Remain fit for duty during on‑call windows and maintain readiness to respond in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold).

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid CDL (Class A or B) with endorsements required for towing operations.

  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meeting company and insurance standards.

  • 1–3 years of medium‑ or heavy‑duty truck repair, towing, or closely related experience.

  • Strong diesel/mechanical skills across brakes, electrical, engines, and general truck repair.

  • Prior experience in roadside service and/or wrecker operations strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work safely on active roadways, in traffic, and in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to use smartphones/tablets and company apps for dispatch, documentation, and timekeeping.

  • Ability to pass pre‑employment background check and drug/alcohol screening (and ongoing, where required).

Preferred

  • ASE or OEM certifications in medium/heavy truck.

  • Towing, recovery, or tire industry certifications (can be obtained during training).

  • Experience with both commission‑based towing and hourly technician roles.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Frequent driving and operation of service trucks and wreckers.

  • Regular standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and working under and around heavy vehicles.

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tools, parts, chains, and rigging often in the 50–100 lb range, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Outdoor work on highway shoulders, truck stops, yards, and rural locations in all weather (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind).

  • Exposure to traffic, noise, diesel exhaust, automotive fluids, and shop/roadside hazards.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to perform the essential functions of this job or to participate in the hiring process, please contact Human Resources.

  • Eligibility for benefits such as health insurance, 401(k), and paid time off, subject to plan terms and waiting periods.

Pay Transparency (Multi‑State):
Actual earnings vary based on location, work mix (towing vs. roadside), call volume, and individual performance. Where required by law, an estimated pay or earnings range and a summary of benefits will be provided in this posting or during the hiring process, consistent with applicable state and local pay transparency requirements.
